I was asked to come up with a pattern that was larger than my typical hunting / game processing field knife. This person wanted something for larger size game such as elk and a little more blade in length and thickness. In my mind that means a more utility blade concept verses a more thin and smaller whitetail idea.

So I came up with this pattern for him. It is killer in the hand and ticks many boxes for me in what I like in a good knife pattern. Very happy with this design. I call it the H.U.T.4 (hunt/utility/trail/4”).

blgoode blgoode that’s pretty much the perfect size for just about everything in my experience. A common mistake some makers make with a 4-5” hunting knife is make the blade too tall, doing that enlarges the entire knife which can make some of them a bit cumbersome for the angles you sometimes have to position the knife in, especially when your hands and knife are inside an animal. (A benefit to the taller blade is more belly but I seem to use the tip area a lot on game so it doesn’t matter much to me)

I think you did a great job keeping that blade approx. 1” tall and you gave it plenty of handle with some nice contours. The colors…nailed it there too.

What blade steel did you use?

This particular one is 0-1. I also used 8670 on the brown and black micarta one I’ll have available in June. I’ll be working up one in AEBL for a guy soon to add to his hunting options also.
