Had my first run in with a rattlesnake on my front porch a few days ago. So what if it's a baby, its still cool

It's got one full button in addition to its pre-button, so I figure it's about 2-4 months old.

Cool! I like snakes, but hot ones, young or not, aren't for me. I'll stick to my nice python thanks. But that is pretty awesome!

Since they're protected here, I won't say anything about...taking care of them....

I'll just say it wouldn't be a pet

Be careful with that little bastard Dan

Dan my friend, please have someone come by to relocate it. The responsibility and experience required to keep HOTs is very high. Its just not safe, dangerous even for the experienced.

A guy I knew had a Pigmy Rattler escape and was out for 2 weeks in his house. His two long time roommates moved out the same day it got out. Can't say I blame them.

That's a northern pacific rattler. I had two of them as pets for a while. Of all the rattlers they are least aggressive and the least venomous. Still pretty dangerous. I kept mine for about a year and released them (also had a blue ring octopus once). Have you kept snakes before?

Oh and what they say about baby rattlesnakes is true. They are more dangerous than the adults. They release all the venom at once so just because its a baby doesn't mean it's less dangerous.

my uncle kept four boas in a huge terrarium but never seen venomous snakes kept at home - they look cool though

I have 5 pythons and 2 boas, the largest being 21 feet and there is NO way I would even consider getting a hot.

There really is no room for error.

Could make a nice inlay in a sheath, but definitely use caution as the young ones are killers.

Not sure about California but in Oregon it is illegal to capture and retain wildlife as it is property of the state and under the control of the ODFW. Please look into the laws in your state regarding wildlife as you could be looking at serious fines/legal problems by keeping this snake as a pet.

Yeah not a smart move.

I see the troll is back... I thought I told you I ignored you the last time you trolled my thread? Did you just think people were going to start bashing me in this thread so you figured it's okay to jump on the bandwagon?

Seriously, why do you keep reading my threads? You're so trollish you don't even know you're doing it

Yes, quite a few. Snakes are sneaky, most people underestimate them because of the lack of extremities or digits, but they can do alot with what they have. I have an extended reach grabber and that's the only thing that ever enters his cage, I pour the water through the screen and the lid is triple secured. I had a king snake, one of my first snakes, escape from a tank by getting the factory latching mechanism undone.

I've handled enough dangerous animals, especially agitated ones in peoples' homes, in the field to know when I'm outmatched and I need tools. I wasn't going to keep him, but his left eye might be damaged. I figure I'll hang onto him for at least a couple weeks to make sure he's okay. I figure it's like having a lionfish, fun to watch, but I'm not getting my hands anywhere near it.

You had a blue ring octopus!?!?! I looked all over for those in the ocean in Okinawa, but I never saw one.

The babies don't have full control over their venom muscles which is why all the venom comes out at once. Venom is a precious resource, in all animals that have it and they don't use any more of it than they have to.

I looked it up and it's legal to keep one as a pet here. Don't worry, I'm not advocating breaking the law in my state.

Yeah, the internet is great, two seconds and I found out it is legal to keep them here... *edit* should have looked into it more, I think it might be illegal, of well, time to let him go

Am I the only one Dan sees as a Troll when I disagree with him?

I really thought you might have gotten a nice pet and was interested in what might be shared. But capturing a dangerous piece of wildlife is not what I was expecting. I don't think it is a good thing to do in many aspects.

Oops, looks like I was wrong about the legality here, time to shut this thread down, sorry.

I thought about what I said about the "2 second search" and realized how stupid that sounded...
