I LOVED this knife. SO substantial! (Look at that spine thickness!)

Thank you, Chad.

Thanks a lot Jim, great photos and posting them for me as well, I need some schooling on forum posting! "LOL"

Crazy hamon! Looks like smoke. Very cool. And I'm a sucker for a sub hilt. Nice work! I also like the way the swedge and spine come together.

Looks like a beast. Nice work. I'm working on a sub-hilt right now. Hope it comes out as nice as yours.

Thanks guys, I was excited about this piece, just wanted any feedback good or bad. The blade may show a little Lurquin influence just so I don't get called out on that, but I think the ricasso and guard utilized is my own, don't think I have seen a lot of subhilts with both single lug guards.

Really surprised there are no opinions on this

Thanks for showing.
I didn't express my opinions because i'm not so sure yet...but there is something which IMHO is wrong with the flow, which seems kind of disrupted.
The wide blade, so close with the comparatively thin "neck" of the handle seems a little odd, i can't help but imagining a slender blade starting from that handle.
It is a big knife, so it can be very different first person then in the pictures. The craftmanship, fit finish and all is excellent, anyway :thumbup:

It is not my personal cup of tea.

1. I think the hamon is WAY too high, and the line between hard and soft is not clearly demarcated.... by general standards it shows that you didn't necessarily have a strong understanding of the steel in heat treat this way, especially towards the tip and turnback(boshi).

2. The handle sculpt is very wide from spine to edge, am not sure this would feel comfortable in my medium-small girly hands.

3. Kevin posted that he liked the ricasso/choil treatment. That rounded edge NEVER looks right to me and in this particular case, the angular version would have been superior. I think, because of the other rounded areas, other posters who are predisposed to like this look are commenting on it.

4. Is the clip sharp?

I DO very much like the sculpting on the hilts themselves, that shows command of art and craft, as well as the steel plug in the butt of the knife, not proud of the wood and nicely integrated. You have some good and interesting stuff going on, but for me, if I was at a show, I would want to pick this knife up(always the goal of the maker), but would probably just hold it, and put it down.

Fit and finish look to be above average in all respects.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

imo, the blade says 'chopper', while the handle says 'fighter'.
the knife is a little confusing to me, although I greatly admire the attention to detail and the obvious skill behind the build.

the ricasso treatment you've got going is something I like. I see it with Lin and Ben's work, and it makes a lot of sense to me, although it strays from the traditional ABS style recessed ricasso. Which is probably part of the reason I like it :)

I did a little rendering, (very generalized) of how I think this pattern could be improved in future iterations, I hope you don't mind.

Great input guys! First off nothing was by accident on this knife, I aint saying its perfect but pretty close to what I was shooting for, tried something different and changed my comfort zone a bit to be a bit more edgy. Steven, really appreciate your opinion, you never bullshit and are usually spot on with your eye, but I purposely created that hamon look to be ghostly looking and ended up with a little more depth that what I thought I would get, and no the clip isn't sharp. Lorien, I always respect your knife eye as well, good input, and I toyed with blade drop quite a bit when drawing this knife and ended up with all that forward drop hoping to add some power to it. This is the good stuff I am after guys thanks.

I like it, if I were going to quibble, I'd say the blade is way too close to the front of the guard, almost touching in fact. Makes it looks, well...crowded.

I'd love to hold it.

I am one of those who likes the rounded heel/ricasso treatment. I like the fusion of chopper blade and fighter handle. I have a large hand (XXL), and like a meaty handle.

For looks, I often prefer a wide blade from edge to spine. And I really like the look of this blade.

My thoughts on the guard heel gap: I really like the close spacing on this knife. I feel it gives the knife more useable edge to overall length than if you had included an extra .5 or more inches at that transition.

the photo is biased, and doesn't show the ricasso area in a way that is true to form. A straight on profile shot would give a better view of that area.

I was thinking of asking if he had a straight on shot!
