Just posted some new pics. Maddog sent me a few of the new handle on his SN 1. Like his WWII, the handle is Cherry wood but the handle design is much, much different. Maddog, thanks for the pics. You've really got me guessing what the Panawal handle will look like.

I also threw in some pics of my own. Only a few of the pictures on the roll came out. The flash wouldn't work and the ASA of the film was totally wrong for this type of photo. I didn't want the exercise to be a total waste, so I posted those that were somewhat viewable.

Blackdog,

Thanks for posting the pics at the Forum Gallery. Design is a lot different.

The Panawal will look more traditional of course.....you can't do weird stuff to a classic leather handle, or can you?

When do you find time to sleep? LOL.

Let me know what you guys think of the SN1 handle: good and bad please!

Good job, Ray. It looks a tad bit big for the size blade. But it all depends on the feel and the size of one's hand. You'll have to let me handle it.

Maddog,

The design on the Forum gallery will change from time to time, hopefully for the better. I wanted to find a way to keep the pictures from running together and to give credit to those who give us a glimpse at their work (like you and P1445). Thanks again to you both.

The handle on your SN-1 looks like it would provide a very secure, yet natural grip. I believe the term I'm looking for is 'ergodynamic' (?). It goes from a palm-swell into a natural taper to accomodate the ring finger and little finger. It may look "funky" as you say, but I imagine it would be quite comfortable.

As for sleeping...... You mean we're supposed to sleep??? I tried it at work a few times and my boss got really pissed.

Sing, and Blackdog - thanks for the comments.

Yes, the handle is a bit larger than it needs to - perhaps I should have fitted it on the WW instead. I was going for an ergonomic style grip and just having the last two fingers on my hand to secure the handle as opposed to my all of my fingers. The shape is essentially, the shape of my hand at rest...LOL.

I will have to have some other people try it out - some one with larger hands than me would like it (may be...lol). If you have smaller hands than me, you will find it awkward. I wear large gloves usually: my fingers are standard sized, but my palms are wide (if they made a large glove with shorter fingers I would be all set...lol).

If you guys are interested, I can mail it out for you to field test. You are welcome to try the my WW cherry handled one, too.

I find that on the WW, I am choking up on the blade a bit and when I get fatigued, my hand slides up on the grip.

Best NOT to chop when you are tired.

Maddog,

You best send them to Sing. If I do any more field testing around the house my wife'll kill me. I can see the headlines now: Angry woman Kills Husband For Lunar Landscaping. Besides, I might not want to send it back if it fits my hand really well

MadDog: Great work (again). Blackdog: those pics of some of your daggers - very, very jealous I am.

Blackdog,

Your Panawal came in over a week ago - I was on vacation (unsuccessful hunting trip is more like it....lol). I open up the box this morning and took a peek at that bad boy. I like how you took down the height on the end of the handle - the part that STABS into the side of my hands (others hands, too, I am sure...lol).

The construction of the back part of the tang is NOTHING like I had imagined......I stepped DEEP into this one....LOL. There is a ENDCAP like on a standard khukuri?? I must be on fumes.....LOL, I thought the end was solid up to the flared part, and the scales were sandwiched around it like a typical knife. WRONG....LOL.

It looks like I will get to practice my welding, or brazing.

It WILL happen, Blackdog, just a couple of curves in the road. Never a boaring moment - I need WAKE up call anyway!

I traded off my GH WW to Mike L, for some more handless khukuri (s). I must be a glutton for punishment. It gets dark pretty fast, and I should spend less time on the internet anyway....LOL.

Insert foot into mouth DEEPER! :P

MadDog: My Gosh! You are a glutton for punishment. You know, I DO have a couple more handless world wars . . . JUST KIDDING! I wouldn't do that to you.

I am anxious for you to take the Panawal down, as I think you may be in for a surprise when you do. Unlike the WWIII, the Panawal, I am suspecting, has some sort of "double tang" versus a traditional full tang - or some sort of design that keeps the vibration down. I am embarrassed to say that I have never taken one apart - Blackdogs will be the first disassembled one. I'd really like it if you'd post some pics of the de-scaled handle for us to see.

Ray,

The handle on the Panawal got a pretty good going over so it would be comfortable for me. If the scales hadn't started to loosen it would have worked just fine. As you said, the full tang is quite substantial and trying to get it downsized to accomodate leather washers may be one heck of a chore. Considering the dimensions and weight of the blade, it may be even counter-productive.

I tend to have more use for the lighter, faster Khuk's like the SN-1 and the Mini-Jungle. I'd be willing to trade you the Panawal for a lighter model (like another SN-1, a Sirupati or a WWII) with one of your wood handle creations. You could use the Panawal and the leather washers for other projects.

Let me know if that's agreeable to you. I'll be happy either way. All I ask is that you keep me supplied with pictures to post from time to time.
