Inspired by a Rayban pocket sheath - with a few of my own tweaks. Version 2 with improvements is already underway. As I built this - the "best" way to finish this design concept revealed itself. Finding the correct weight leather is always the issue here in western Illinois ... this was made from a "real leather" billfold blank from Hobby Lobby. A little too thick for the final result I was looking for.

The leather was finished with a light coat of cordovan & black shoe polish. Not the best, but the only leather finish I have at the moment. Any finishing product recommendations from the forum pros would be welcome.

Here's something you may do to cut down on some of the thickness...just a real quick run through with scraps but I think you can get the idea.

Thanks Rayban ... I really need to find a supply for veg tan leathers! I'm getting the hang of handstitching and the list of projects is getting longer. :D A lot of practice has been with chrome tanned scraps :thumbdn: (from Hobby Lobby) but it does not work as well as veg tanned

I've got a grooving tool but I'm not sure how deep to make the groove - I would suppose that it needs to be at least as deep as the diameter of the thread being used. Is there an unwritten "rule" about grooving that I haven't heard of yet?

I admire your design, very nice!
Was wondering if you'd share with me how you made the tab-piece that's on the flashlight ring? (please!) That's cool!

As far as the groove for the thread. I would not make it real deep as you start to get too deep and the leather will close up over the thread as you pull it tight. I make a accurate first pass and then if needed I make another light pass to deepen it a bit. I'd say just about half the thickness of the thread is deep enough. you will pull it tight and it will cinch down. A tiny bit above the channel will be fine and it is doubtfull that the any abrasion on the thread and cutting it will happen.

My final iteration on this concept. It would need to seriously "tweaked" to be something I would carry on a regular basis. Already thinking about a smaller two slot version based on Rayban's post in this thread. The Weekender concept is physically "strong" but too "tall" and not "flat" enough to suit me since it will ride in my front pocket.

The most problematic part of this design is figuring out how to get the bottom edges to lay flat so the edges don't bulge out at the corners.
