New Precinct issue.

I picked up a new Precinct yesterday. Knife is flawless. The only issue I have is the detent hole on the blade seems to be slightly larger than the detant ball on the liner lock. When the knife is closed, you can wiggle the blade a little and can feel it when shaking the knife. The knife will not open when shaking, but you can just feel the detent ball moving in the detent hole in the blade.

I called Benchmade and just got a canned response, of "I don't know, send it in and we will look at it." ...I was hoping they could at least look at one and see if it is normal, as I can't see it being that off in machining. I mean, it just might be fine.

This shouldn't be the case. The detent hole in the blade should be slightly smaller than the detent ball.

I can see where that would bother you. Try contacting a dealer that has one in stock, ask them to check theirs out and see if it does the same thing.

That is a bummer, sounds like the QC folks aren't really scrutinizing the products enough before they leave the door. I know they cannot check each and every knife, but the blade play, lock rock, off centering, crooked bevels, asymmetric sharpening angles are not normal and should be caught more frequently.

check each and every knife, . . . [for] . . .blade play, lock rock, off centering, crooked bevels, asymmetric sharpening angles .

Oh now you're just being a pill.
A perfectionist.
A regular old knife customer.

Are these little gems being turned out in such high volume that EVERY knife actually can not be checked ? ?

Does Case check every single knife ? I mean . . . like . . . every single case is still "hand sharpened" . . . so they are opening each blade by hand and handling it right ? Time to take a quick look and wiggle.

Maybe I'm just dreaming the dream of the naive.

My Case knives are a third the price and have highly polished blades and are for the most part VERY consistently good quality.

Me . . . ? . . . I would probably have pulled the blade out and peened the edges of the detent hole to coin the edge and make the hole smaller.

Maybe not so naive . . . hard to tell from where I sit . . . here in the land of Serendip. <<<<=link

After all of this time this (lack of...) should not be the norm. Their return policy is very good; yet without good QC the business can't sustain itself for long. In my time, there was only one knife that couldn't be resolved by a return trip to Oregon City. Good was made in the form of a requested replacement. So we know that it has to be possible to correct this situation. Yet that doesn't seem to be the case. And the fact that their pricing structure has changed the way business is done, leaves many first time customers like one recent entry; where they were quite willing to toss an Adamas in into their toolbox, never mind returning it for the necessary repairs. The resulting losses can't outweigh the balance being off the mark. Forgive my bluntness, I remain a huge fan.

Ditto . . . goes for me as well.
Ha,ha
some people drop ship their brand new knives, not just Benchmade, to Apostle P. for reprofiling and sharpening (and some minor tuning).
I wonder if we, who are "in the know", might not want to make it a normal practice of DROP SHIPPING new Benchmade purchases directly back to QC HQ in Oregon City for a first inspection before having them forwarded to us pill, perfectionist, regular old knife customers ?

PS: can you imagine ? ? ? thousands and thousands of knives being delivered by a constant parade of post delivery vehicles all showing up at that one little office, maned (or womaned) by that one little person ? Might get somebody's attention . . . at the very least a raise for the soon to be institutionalized person bravely holding that official seat.

It's great that Benchmade is so quick to correct these issues, but wouldn't it be so much easier for everyone concerned if they just got this stuff right more often in the first place???

wy no ! ! !
Then we wouldn't have anything to complain about here.

I wonder how many packages arrive at BKC's warranty service department on a daily basis? Going back a few years, and only once, a package I mailed disappeared. They found it eventually, and all was well. That's got to be a daunting job, given errors in the system, holidays and special offerings. As WB above says, we wouldn't have anything to complain about. Now That would be an Ideal worth examining!

So the detent ball holds the knife closed even if you shake it...but that's a serious QC problem...? Couldn't it just be a little tiny wad of grease and/or dirt/lint in the wrong place?

It was a factory fresh never carried knife. It was clean....and when moving the blade, you could feel a distinct "click" where the detent ball was hitting the sides of the hole. There was about 1/32-1/64" movement.

I got a reply from Benchmade Warranty and they said some play is normal. But I already traded it with my dealer and grabbed a Mini-Barrage And yesterday, I grabbed a Griptilian from another dealer near me and they had a new Precinct in stock, and it did not have this issue.
