new project for a neighbor -- cutting boxes -- what do you suggest?

A neighbor takes care of her sick husband who is home in bed on various IVs and tubes (better at home than a hospital -- she is a nurse and she is the only reason he is still alive.)

We visited today and she pointed out a pile of cardboard boxes that she is storing in the basement.

As you know, medical products come with lots of packaging. The IVs come in these cartons that aren't good for much else due to their strange design.

So my new assignment is to sharpen a khukuri and then go to work chopping up the boxes and taking them to recycling.

So which khukuri or knife do you suggest?

"super knife"
you can get these in hardware stores on knife shops.. under different brands like husky etc.
there's also a mini version available.

1. EXPLAIN IN ADVANCE what you are going to do. :)

2. Bring two of your largest khuks and explain to them that they are in a contest.

3. Time each khuk on similar boxes. Tell the khuks this was a qualifying heat.

4. Run semi-finals until you have only two remaining.

5. Give the khuks time to rest.

6. Run the FINALS.

7. Reward the winning khuk with a Johnson's car wax job. Make the loser wait a day.

8. Take your medications. :D

Read the safety thread first.

Heck, why not take a few?

Sirupati, a sharp one, comes to mine.

I was cutting up a cardboard box with a tarwar the other day.. didn't take long. :)

I did warn the neighbor that I'd be bringing big knives over, and she didn't seem to have a problem with it. My wife warned her too.

Sirupati definitely. And I'm thinking maybe a Malla? Hmmmmm....

Try a new khuk each time. It will probably take you quite a few trips but it will be worth it.

If you had asked me a week ago, I would say to use a chiruwa AK. (Should you need to drop a tree, split some wood, or pry the door off a car while you're there...well, you're covered.) Since you're asking me today, I'd say that one of the kardas accompanying a YCS is just about perfect for the task. :)

Any good razor knife = good
Hollow ground blade = bad
Drywall hammer (hatchet side) = very bad
....but hey, I was just a kid and didn't know better. The front porch was never the same

Never had a whole lot of luck chopping boxes. I'd use one of the Sarge's Hunters or Bruise's KK to cut them. The thinner the blade, the better.

Have fun.

I guess it would depend on two factors: your mood and your wallet. I personally favor the 20" kobra as my box destroyer, but sometimes i get in a weird mood and like to just mash the bejeezus out of things with my 22" GRS. Orrrrrr, if i have some money burning a hole in my pocket, I find a model that don't have (or want another one of) on the HI shopping site and convence myself that THAT is the khuk best suited for the job at hand. none of the other 20 or so khuks would be up to the task. It wouldn't be fair to pressure them into such obvious and gross abuses of their designs;)

Honestly, i'd use a large bladed SAK or serrated sheepsfoot blade on my leatherman for box detail. I dunno, making little cardboard people out of the boxes might be kind of fun too. Then you could hack them to pieces in clumsy spinning archs a la Cold Steel and make wild claims about your "fighting khukuri's unbeatable cutting ability to through a thin cardboard target where all other knives would fail...except one made by Sheeva "Velvetanator" Cheese with his double secret probation forging technique that can bisect 1000 kittens and still shave the hair off your arm";)...just tzn. Cold Steel is one of my guilty pleasures.

I use a boxcutter. Just get one for 49 cents, get a few extra single-edged rzor blades, and save the khukuris for some plywood that needs to be chopped up.

I don't use good blades on cardboard. It is so abrasive, that some people actually use the stuff as a strop. I prefer leather for that.

Paper is also hard on blades, and my Mom always would throw a fit if I even asked to use her fine scissors on paper.

Did I hear this right?? In the Cantina? That has got to be a first! :D

Maybe we should have a thread somewhere for brilliant one-liners?

Razor sharp 30" Sirupati or Kobra. Wave it in circles over your head and with your best Dervish yell smash into the pile of boxes over and over, cutting and slashing the bejesus out of everything.

This way you will have one hell of a good time, AND never be asked to do chores for your neighbor again! One of those rare double bonus win/win situations! :D

After you get done swinging at the big pieces, use a Sickle, Kerambit, clurit, etc. on the small leftovers. The inside curve will keep the box from running for its life. With serrated edge, even better. If you don't have one, try a carpet knife.

Bruise already won that one, going away.

As far as the boxes:

1. Thermite.

2. Recruit some else to help. Just tell him that you're going to carry the boxes outside. Keep khuk concealed. When you get outside, suddenly *remember* your fear of empty boxes, and start waving khuk. Hopefully, he'll start to run, giving you a moving target for the ultimate in realistic training. Choose khuk for maximum running from your voluneer. Oh, wait. Aren't situations like this covered in the safety thread?

You forget: they're made for throwing. Or, maybe that's what your point is. Sorry if I missed it.
