I had time to forge out a sword today. It is 52100 steel and 33" overall length. It will have a barrel or two mounted on it also. I know its a crappy picture but better ones later.

I havent done a sword before but I plan to take the back door off my forge and put a long pipe inside. I have a prometer on the forge so I can adjust the temp and will test with magnet also. It helps to preheat the thick ricasso area with a torch first. This is 52100 so I will get plenty of experience because I need to quench it 3 times. I have a 4" x 36" quench tank (pipe) and will plunge point down.
BTW Im open to other methods and ideas from you guys
The salt method is great but Im not set up to heat a sword this long. Wally Hayes shows how he digs a trench in the ground and heats with charcoal.jhiggins said:Time for a salt setup, Bruce?
Bruce the only thing I can add is are you going to circulate the oil? the upper levels are going to get hot..with three quenches,, sure would hate to see the last quench mess up the first. just 2 cents..Bruce Bump said:The salt method is great but Im not set up to heat a sword this long. I plan to let the oil cool off on its own between quenches. There is no hurry with 52100 between dips. Some people I know wait 24 hours.Dan Gray said:Bruce the only thing I can add is are you going to circulate the oil? the upper levels are going to get hot..with three quenches,, sure would hate to see the last quench mess up the first. just 2 cents..![]()

Im already running into troubles with my normalizing. There is still some stress in the steel, I know because it is now bent from just the heat from grinding. This bad boy is going to fight me all the way I have a feeling. Back to the forge for more thermal treatments.
