I had time to forge out a sword today. It is 52100 steel and 33" overall length. It will have a barrel or two mounted on it also. I know its a crappy picture but better ones later.

cool beans Bruce, single or double edged. I've wanted to make a 2 handed broad sword for a long time, but I haven't figured out a way to heat treat something that long yet. My arms won't take the in and out of the forge for 15 minutes or so to get it heated equally, so I'll just have to keep studying it. How are you heat treating those long swords?

Have fun,

Bill

How did I know it's gonna get a couple barrels?:D Quit teasin' and finish it so we can see!

Don't give him any ideas George!

Well.....I can't wait to see this one. I still have half of ALR oogling the ax/gun!

Some of the hunting swords I've seen are beautiful works of art -engraving, gold , the whole works.....The next project for you might be a Elgin pistol/cutlass.

I had visions again last night about this one. It had 2 barrels and twin hammers. I woke up in a cold sweat when the double pop out triggers appeared! I need to quit eating dinner before bedtime.:)

Way to cooooool Mr.Bump
Cant wait to see how this one turns out, like it wont be a spectacular piece of art,I know you will do this one proud and raise the bar on us again..

Bar? What BAR? Double-B raised that bar so high now, I need a stepladder just to see it with binoculars!

That is going to be great. Can't wait. How do you heat treat the blade?

(QUOTE) How do you heat treat the blade?

I havent done a sword before but I plan to take the back door off my forge and put a long pipe inside. I have a prometer on the forge so I can adjust the temp and will test with magnet also. It helps to preheat the thick ricasso area with a torch first. This is 52100 so I will get plenty of experience because I need to quench it 3 times. I have a 4" x 36" quench tank (pipe) and will plunge point down.

BTW Im open to other methods and ideas from you guys

Time for a salt setup, Bruce?

The salt method is great but Im not set up to heat a sword this long. Wally Hayes shows how he digs a trench in the ground and heats with charcoal.

Bruce the only thing I can add is are you going to circulate the oil? the upper levels are going to get hot..with three quenches,, sure would hate to see the last quench mess up the first. just 2 cents..:)

I plan to let the oil cool off on its own between quenches. There is no hurry with 52100 between dips. Some people I know wait 24 hours.:)
Im already running into troubles with my normalizing. There is still some stress in the steel, I know because it is now bent from just the heat from grinding. This bad boy is going to fight me all the way I have a feeling. Back to the forge for more thermal treatments.

Cool good luck with it..you'll over come the problems..:)

That is cool Bruce. So the whole blade will be hardened? Then how will you temper it? Too big for my oven.
