Dear Sirs,

I got a new blade that looks like a Buck Kalinga blade:

Only in the direct comparison the differences are visible. The Blade is a few smaller than a Kalinga blade but clear larger than the Akonua blade. It irritates, that the angel is that short. Now I want to give the knife a new life. But what handle looks best with this blade?

What's your opinion: Shall I use the mounted brass guard or not? What kind of wood looks better: dark or pale wood? with ot without a ferrule? Shall I imitate a full tang or do I leave the tang inside? Or makes it sense to copy the handle of the "Haebbie DM 119" (without its mistakes)?

Lookin' forward to a lively discussion,

Haebbie

Copy your Damascus 119 handle.....I always say you have to"do" something
to make mistakes.So make away!:D

Well IMHO,

My favorite 401 has a stag handle with NK bolsters.....Of course that is my only 401 to date. I agree with EEE; copy your DM 119. But, you must post many photos of this project ;) .

Well then, the project continues

Here's the first draft:

And the blade without brass guard

Material from left to right: Bison bone, nickle silver, red paper fibre, nickle silver, amber,
silver, fibre, bone, thin black fibre, black locust, fibre, bone.

What do you think?

Hi Haebbie -- I'm thinking stag or bone would look really nice with that blade, if it's going to be a "user" the brass guard would help protect the digits. Can you post a pic of the materials you have on hand?

Steve, Dave,

thank you for your answer. I like to build the "Kalingonua" similar to the bowie I made earlier.

Have a look at the essentials

and to the finished knife.

Best,
Haebbie

Haebbie - Just so you know, the Kalinga and the Akonua were both full tang knives. I don't know where this blade came from, but it doesn't look like a Buck. Thanks, and good luck with your project. The damascus 119 looks great!!

Jimmer_5,

thank you for the nice comment. The blade I got from the same guy who gave me the 119 DM blade. He told, that it is is handmade from a Buck employee. He liked to make a Kalinga like knife with a hidden tang. But I don't know whether it is true. But here you can see the next step from the making of the Kalingonua.

Best,
Haebbie

Nice Haebbie! I love those work in progress pictures, keep them coming!

What type of wood is that? Nice grain, looks like maybe Oak?

mainewoodsman,

I like those pic's too. And if you like, I'll post the workflow further on.
The wood is black locust, harvested in Berlin. Otherwise I use this wood for flatbows.

Best,
Haebbie

Well then - next step:

After the first grinding
(The drawing for the comparison).

I had not enough bison bone, so I took stag from red antler.

Next steps coming soon

Best,
Haebbie

Nice work Haebbie!! Just awesome! I love the 119 and now I understand why E-cubed wants one so bad. Please keep those pictures coming. :)
