My XM-18 is my favourite folder, which is saying something 'cause I own a few. ;)
A friend of mine is a gold smith, and when he saw the filler tabs that are for sale, he said he could make something nice also. I took his idea and worked with it a bit, and came up with the following:
First make a filler tab with the original dimensions, but of 14 carat gold. Then solder a gold object of your choice to the tab.
My friend Richard cut the tab for me first and polished it, drillled a hole in it and screwed it in place.
Then he asked me what to solder to it, and I had some ideas but nothing definite yet. A four-leaf clover, a bulldog face, a skull(:D), I don't know.

And then I thought it might interest other owners as well. So I am asking for your input. If there is enough interest, I will ask Richard to make them, and members here can buy them at cost. Richard's input is not for free but mine is.
A heads-up: just the cost in gold for this tab is €60,-, which is around $85. This does not include his workmanship. Once I decide on an ornament, it will have to be either made custom or made to size, and soldered, meaning more cost. Simple existing ornaments such as can be found on bracelets (NOT hollow ones!) will mean less work of course, compared to custom sculpting, but everything is possible.

Myself, I am currently thinking of either a die or a bulldog face. But any suggestions are welcome.
Below are some pics of the plain gold filler tab. Already it looks VERY cool, the color difference between the titanium and the gold is very striking (pictures don't really do it justice). Once I decide what I want soldered to it I will of course post more pictures.
If there is sufficient interest from members, I will ask Richard to produce additional selected tabs.

Let me all know what you think!

I know that Rick Hinderer Is Very serious about all of His copy rights on his knives and strongly opposes any thing other then his original parts being sold directly from him, for His knives.

You might want to have this thread move to the "Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment" forum, Hinderer Knives already sells a bronze skull filler tab.

Copy rights? How can copy rights be violated by modifying a knife? I can do what I like with my knife (in the context of mods, of course :D). And if other mods (be it a regrind, an anodized clip, different screws, DIFFERENT SCALES and more) are so widely available, how should this be a problem?
It's not as if I am even offering anything that competes with what's available.

But hey, it's obvious I'm barking up the wrong tree. Consider the offer withdrawn.

Hey Phil , it is nothing personal. your filler tab looks awesome. I am just looking out for a close Personal Friend , and if I am a Fanboi. then I am a proud one at that. take care Pete

Well, you were potentially offering a gold plated skull filler tab, Rick offers a bronze skull filler tab, the only real difference being the finish IMO which basically directly competes with what Rick already offers. But the bigger issue, you are doing it directly in his forum. You can do whatever you like with your knife, but peeing in someone else's pool is probably not going to be appreciated.

;)

Well it certainly wasn't meant as competition, quite the opposite. Nothing like this is being offered (no, the bronze skull doesn't compare) and I offered it for other fans of this knife. I am not peeing in Rick's pool, I tried to make life there even more fun. At zero profit to myself, I will add.
It seems the first thing that comes to the minds of fans is defensiveness. It's ironic because in most branches of industry, the appearance of third party products is seen as a plus for the core product.
Anyway. Rest assured that Rick has nothing to fear from me (not like he'd ever think so). I will keep my project to myself and those who think it simply enhances the knife without hurting anyone.

Signing off,

Well Im not sure about all the copyright stuff but if this project does come to fruition then Im on board for sure.
Golds nice but Id even be up for a silver filler tab with maybe a skull or a bulldog face like you suggested.
Sounds like a real neat project.

I think it's a neat idea, and no more an infringement than when someone replaces the lock-bar stabilizer with a 9mm casing base.:)

Sweet. A bit over the top for me.
it got me thinking of what the ideal material for me would be if I was to do something similar. A powerful rare earth magnet came to mind. It would look cool if polished/chromed and be very useful if you are working with small screws/parts and want a safe place to stick them.
As a tech, I could see myself doing on the fly repairs and a small magnet like that would be very useful.
