My XM-18 is my favourite folder, which is saying something 'cause I own a few.
A friend of mine is a gold smith, and when he saw the filler tabs that are for sale, he said he could make something nice also. I took his idea and worked with it a bit, and came up with the following:
First make a filler tab with the original dimensions, but of 14 carat gold. Then solder a gold object of your choice to the tab.
My friend Richard cut the tab for me first and polished it, drillled a hole in it and screwed it in place.
Then he asked me what to solder to it, and I had some ideas but nothing definite yet. A four-leaf clover, a bulldog face, a skull
D), I don't know.
And then I thought it might interest other owners as well. So I am asking for your input. If there is enough interest, I will ask Richard to make them, and members here can buy them at cost. Richard's input is not for free but mine is.
A heads-up: just the cost in gold for this tab is 60,-, which is around $85. This does not include his workmanship. Once I decide on an ornament, it will have to be either made custom or made to size, and soldered, meaning more cost. Simple existing ornaments such as can be found on bracelets (NOT hollow ones!) will mean less work of course, compared to custom sculpting, but everything is possible.
Myself, I am currently thinking of either a die or a bulldog face. But any suggestions are welcome.
Below are some pics of the plain gold filler tab. Already it looks VERY cool, the color difference between the titanium and the gold is very striking (pictures don't really do it justice). Once I decide what I want soldered to it I will of course post more pictures.
If there is sufficient interest from members, I will ask Richard to produce additional selected tabs.
Let me all know what you think!
