Well I am fairly new to this whole survival thing. But now my camping trips are becoming more frequent and into harsher terrain. I was thinking of putting together my own PSK. I already have some gear in the pack. But with all these variations of a psk it is quite confusing. I was thinking of paking it all in to either s small pelican box -1010 or a medium sized one -1020. IT will most likely be carried on person.
I see that edcdepot.com has a good range of survival gear - are these a good start.
What are the basics? What kind of stuff should fit in the box? All ideas welcome.

Nick

I like the Ritter PSK. I'm not an expert, I put most of my stuff together myself In my opinion these are the basics. For me it is in two levels. What is on my person, and what is in my vehicle. I like the idea of a PSK, but for me urban wise it is really inconvenient for me. In the woods though I carry a Ritter in my cargo pocket.

EDC:
Strider AR
Leatherman Squirt
Small Bic with 4 feet of Gorilla tape around it
Arc AAA light
Wallet, at least 50 dollars cash
Firearm: Usually 1911, sometimes a J frame or something similiar.
Hotspark Scout on 550 cord necklace.
Phone

Vehicle:
Poncho GI
Poncho Liner
wool cap
Work gloves with liners
Pot
Axe
fixed blade
Large ferro rod with tinder
Small compass
Brass wire 20'
spyder line 50'

Water purification tabs

thanks for the reply. But just to clear things up - Im in Australia so i don't use a firearm and I'm only 18, so I don't drive much at all.

The ritter pack is a good palce to start.

Main things you should be able to accomplish with your kit.

-Food procurment: fising line, snare wire, bags for water, tinfoil for boiling it, and even tablets for purifing it.

-Shelter: A small matel blanket, they are pocket size, some dental flose, and wire.

-Singnaling: a mirror, whislte, and flares are a good addition should they fit in your kit. And the ability to start a fire.

-Fire: You should at least three ways to make fire, ferro rod, lighter and matches, and another lighter ;)

Then every thing else you can/want to take. A small tarp is a better shelter, some extra water should be with you anyways. Some thing edibale, boullion cubs, candies things like that. Of course your knife, and a sak if possible. And yes of coruse a compass, or gps the you've got the cash, but back it up with a compass anyways. (battries dont last for ever)

Theres something missing I know it, its hard to remember everything let alone list them :D

Evolute - great read! Your kit is quite extensive -can it fit in a pocket?

Yeh i normally have a flint and steel in my pocket. But I'm a lot more worried about the heat in Australia. I went camping 3 weeks ago - supposedly in Winter and couldn't even sleep it was so hot.

water is your only friend then, and a hat. Keep baggie cloths, and keep cool. Oh yeah, and LOTS OF WATER :D:D

Keep on reading the many excellant ideas for kits on this and other sites, then shamelessly steal the best ideas that will work for you and your area. Evolute provides us all with a great resource, and Fonly has posted examples of stuffing the kitchen sink under his shirt. Just don't ask Fonly for fashion advice.

Two things:
1. Gear.
Make sure you use "camping" type candles that burn 6-9 hours.
I like to carry wax paper. It folds up small like foil, and it has many uses.
2. Skill.
If water is your main concern, practice your water gathering and making it safe to drink skills often.

ahh yeah, stick that quick on in there dont ya, I'll have you know I carry that thing every day, and evened it out some, and my shirts are fine :D :D

NICK-NAC what are the laws in OZ about carring a long bow, or compound when you are out and about. Very usefull in survival

I based mine on the Ritter, and use a Pelican 1020 micro case. I have a Ranger band that goes around the latch. Helps keep it closed, and I use it as a belt loop.
I added according to my needs in Ohio, but a couple of nice add ons are a small Atwood knife (I have the scout) and a DMT credit card sharpener. I also took a small ceramic rod and fit it in the plastic tube the duck tape is wrapped around (the rod was from a gatco pocket sharpener).
With the pelican, you can pack the top with flat items, and fit a suprising amount of stuff in it.

You can toss the P-38--- you have a can opener on the Farmer. I did the same thing.

the aussie style P38 (also known as a FRED) has a small spoon on the end of it
(FRED stands for F*****g Rediculous Eating Device)

Echo63 - Yeh thats what it's called but we call it the F******* Retarted Eating Device. I find it useful as something i can use to scratch at things or poke at things i wouldn't want my knife to do.
