I've only seen this knife in the Sportsman's Guide, and was wondering if anybody has one. 4.25" 440C blade. Zytel handle. Nylon sheath. Made in China. $20
This seems to be a mistake in price for a Puma, unless the quality of their Asian-made knives is less than standard. Does anybody have any feedback on this knife?

I bought a German made Puma from SG last year and was not too impressed by the overall quality, so in this case outsourcing to China might be an improvement. But my gut feeling tells me you should save your money.

An excellent knife in this price range is the Kabar Dozier series, they retail for about the same price.

'S.G.' refused to sell me a Puma Bowie last spring due to 'perceived' legal problems. I got the thing cheaper elsewhere - and it is perfect. Their German made items are still every bit as good as they once were. I have increased my Puma collection considerably over the last six months by buying closeout Puma's from the local Academy stores - who seem hellbent on going for the 'Made in PRC' stuff over quality these days.

My least favorite recent Puma is their German-made 'Sportec' metal/plastic handled lockback... a modern design, well executed - great shaver sharp blade - funky through-slot to open it. Still, a bargain. Their 'Micro-Stag', at $14.63, is a great bargain - admittedly, for a teeny knife... with stag! I won't buy offshore knives from the 'good guys', ie, Buck, Kershaw, Puma, or Spyderco. That seems to limit me a bit, too.

I also won't deal with a company, 'S.G.', who decides they don't want to sell to me because a bean counter - or legal beagle - said it would be best. This is Alabama - you can buy darn near anything here! I don't miss them, that's for sure!

Bought a huntec a bit back and the liner lock gets jammed when opened at times. Stay away from cheaper Pumas I would say.

I've owned/used several Pumas starting in the mid-70's, and their earlier knives have been just great. Primary hunting knife is a 972 Game Warden, 2 blade lockback which is like a scalpel and holds its edge beautifully. I bought a "made in Germany" bone handle Stockman a couple of years ago and was not at all impressed. Fit/finish were so-so and it doesn't take/hold a good edge -- nowhere near what my older Pumas will do. I gave it away. I'd say if you want a top quality knife, look elsewhere, myself.
