Greetings -

Received my first Busse/Kin this am. Custom Shop Satin RMD w/ beautifully patterned Pumpkins. Fit, balance are flawless, but there are several dark spots on the top/bottom of the grip metal between the scales.

Since this is the first time I have even seen a Busse (except on the 'net), was wondering if this is normal, and what I can do - if anything - to safely remove these spots.

I could live with these "imperfections", but they do sort of detract from the overall beauty of this fine knife, and any advice will be appreciated. I admit that I purchased this knife for its beauty and investment potential, and it will not be used "in the field" unless the "balloon goes up" - I have plenty of other blades for those duties.

Thanks in advance and...Cheers.

Pictures for something like this are necessary if you want people to give accurate advice. Without seeing what your talking about, its impossible to say if this is an issue or not.

Thanks...Will get photos when able. Thought this may have been something that some of you have seen before...Cheers.

Pix would definitely help here, but it sounds like a few spots of oxidation. SR101 is a high carbon steel and it will rust if not taken care of, especially in humid climates. You can use a metal polish (Flitz, Mothers) to try and remove them. I'd start out slowly with a little polish on a Qtip and go with the grain (satin lines) and gently rub back and forth until they fade away. Try to not rub too hard or too long as these cleaners/polishes will create shiny spots in the metal. Once gone, rub some mineral oil or a Tuff cloth on the knife (blade, tang, spine...everywhere but on the G-10 handles) to keep oxidation at bay.

If you are nervous about trying this, then contact Busse to see about having the tang refinished. :)

I had a Busse that I had used and then accidentally neglected by putting back in its cardboard blade protector still damp and with tree crap all over it...for a year. :o:o ...and here's a pic to show how well Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish took care of it in less than 15 minutes after finding rust & oxidation and old sap all over the blade.

Mothers is good stuff. Give that a go and if it doesn't work you can always contact Swamp Rat and they will take care of you.

Success! I used some old Turtle Wax Chrome Polish I had in the garage. By lightly, and carefully rubbing/buffing with a Q Tip, I was able to remove most of this spotting. Then applied Break Free CLP on the entire blade. This works great on guns - any problems with using this on blades?

Thanks for the fine advice folks!...Cheers.

The RMD satin Pumplin - What a beautiful combination of a tool and work of art. I have taken this knife out and admired its lines and handling...oh, about a million times since its arrival last Monday. I see the appeal of the Bussekins, and the RMD will not be my last purchase in the Busse family...Cheers.

I had a Competition finish Hell Razor that was developing rust from Decarb. Cleaned it up with steel wool, then coated it with CLP. That was about 2 years ago, and it hasn't showed a spot of rust since. CLP is some great stuff.

Mothers, Flitz or some good old FINE scotch brite and get-r-done Bro. Not a problem at all.
