New Puukko - Wood Jewel, Ahti, Brusletto?

Hey everyone. I'm looking to get a new puukko style knife - something nicer looking than a mora. I'm looking at knives from Ragnar from Wood Jewel, Ahti, and Brusletto in the $45-65 range. Any recommendations on these brands? I'm looking for overall quality of the knives, sheaths, etc. I really like the looks of the wood jewels and the Ahtis, but the Ahti sheaths "look" a lot nicer in the pics at least. The Bruslettos bring up the high carbon versus 12c27 debate, but look like nice blades. So any weigh in on that would be appreciated as well. I've never handled any of these brands, and would like to make an informed purchase rather than just going on looks alone. If I'm going to have to epoxy gaps and finish handles on these... I'll just buy another mora. I would really appreciate hearing from some owners. Thank you.

I don't have Wood Jewel or Ahti, but my Busletto-Kniven is a simple design but excellent slicer, very well made.

I haven't owned a Brusletto, but have owned models of the other two you've mentioned. Both are very good, but I prefer Ahti for some reason. I can't really explain why though - I just really like the Ahti knives I have owned.

The Kellams/Ahtis, are pretty cool, and traditional. I always wanted to pick up the "Slasher", but really one of the smaller models like the Puuko would be ideal for general use. I've heard good stuff about Roselli as well, and their notorious edge retention, want to give one a shot sooner or later. I've got a hankering for higher wear resistant carbon steels.

I have the Roselli Hunter, which is a big knife, an the Carpenter knife, which is the best, a very strong, handy personal knife.

Thanks for the help! I do like the Ahtis, but the Busletto kniven does look good as well. I checked out the Rosellis - it seems that I can afford the carpenter or the garlic knife. ha ha. Thanks for pointing those out though - they look great, just a bit out of my range. Can you guys let me know of the sheath quality on the Ahtis and Bruslettos? Both look pretty choice, but just wanted to ask.

I bought a two knife set from Wood Jewel (code is WJ-K) and I'm very happy with it. I use the bigger knife (a nice 3.5" blade pukko) for most of my farm work and outdoors tasks. The smaller one (about 2.4" blade) is a great carving knife or urban fixed blade EDC. The sheath they came in is quite well made, but I rarely carry both together so I had separate sheaths made for them.

I'm not sure what kind of steel they use, it behaves pretty much like 1095 or O1 in my experience (just from regular use, no scientific tests), and that's fine by me. I think they are a good buy and will probably add a couple more to my collection.

Here's one of mine helping with dinner at a winter hunting cabin:

Out of those I would get the Ahti...the Vaara is a nice puukko in that price range. I wouldn't get a Roselli if you are looking for "bang for your buck" as you are mostly paying for the name/ not full tang, and their ultra high carbon blades are prone to chipping.

I've had a number of Brusletto knives (all dating from @ 20 years ago) and have always been very impressed by the quality of them.

As for the steel, 12c27 gives excellent performance : comes very sharp (Helle Lappland, designed as a puukko's big brother), corrosion resistant while retaining a lot of the qualities the high carbon blades boast of. Still needs some occasional cleaning but way better for preparing food, dressing meat or building a sandwich. Elsewhere, the laminated steel used by Mora for their Classic Original range gives simply awesome cutting performance. The knives are very light, traditionally simple and terribly pointy and cutty, for a ridiculous price (around 40 $). Not a display item, but a wonderful everyday user.
