there is a considerable price difference as well.

thank you for any info you may give me.

thank you

The RC5 is the better knife. It is being produced by RAT cutlery. The knife from Ontario is produced under license from RAT cutlery but is a different knife and design.

The RC5 is the one with the skull on it. It also comes with a fantastic sheath.

What do you want to do with the knife? That, more than anything setermines what the best knife is.

The RC-5 and RAT-5 are completely different animals. The RAT-5 is a flat ground knife with a .187" thick spine. The RC-5 is sabre ground with a .25" thick spine. The sheaths do not compare at all. For most tasks, the RC-5 is by far the better knife due to heat treat, fit and finish, warranty, etc.

If you want more of a slicer, I'd recommend the RC4 or RC-6.

Anyone who regularly posts her will tell you to get the RC 5. There is political reasons behind this, which is not where we want to go.

Overall, if you want a slicer, RC 5 is not the best. But if you want a tank, you want the RC 5. Besides that, the RC 5 has better F&F, Warranty, HT, etc.

thank you for the reply's. i just want a good knife to go hiking with heaven for bid i get lost and have to survive in the woods. i take my gerber multi tool with me just in case. im one of those guys that like to to always be prepared. i was kinda thinking the rc-4 just cus it isnt so large. and would probably work just find for me.

Hey BMW
I agree with wildmike, although I used to have an Ontario RAT 5 and I did like it, I sold it to a coworker to fund a RAT Cutlery purchase awhile back. I personally like the RC knives better(fit, finish, and just the way they feel in your hand) and the RC owners business and personal ethics. In fact the RC 5 is going to be my next knife purchase.

The RC 4 is a great woods knife and you will be more than happy with it's performance.

If you want a great all around blade, the RAT-5 would be a better choice. It's thinner and higher ground, making it a better slicer and it's lighter weight would make it less noticeable on your hip and less of a chore to use for longer periods of time.

If you want a totally unbreakable destruction machine, get the RC-5. I've been carrying an RC-5 quite a bit lately and it has handled everything I've asked it to do with no problems but I often finding myself wishing I had my RC-4 instead.

That being said, if I were looking at the RAT-5, I would take a hard look at the RC-4 before I pulled the trigger. I rarely find myself needing more knife than the 4 offers.

Whatever you decide on, make sure to come back and let us know how you like it, welcome to the forum and the RAT pack.

I agree with the above. Your decision should be between those two knives but I would highly recommend the RC-4 for an all around Bushcraft knife. I have the RC-5 and it is a beast which does everything you ask it but its not as versatile as the RC-4. However, if your really need something that will never break, can pry open doors, chop through wood and be a last ditch survival knife and bushcraft knife the RC-5 is it.

I'll chime in again. I carry an RC4 as my everyday EDC blade. It would perform admirably in a survival environment without any problems. It also comes with a great sheath system.

However the RC5 makes up into a fantastic survival kit due to the sheath that comes with the knife. The sheath on my RC5 has 50' of paracord attached. Plus a falkniven DC4 sharpener, a survival fishing kit, strikeforce firestarter and tinder kit.

Hope this helps.

Welcome!

I don't own an RC5 but do have the Izula, RC3 and RC4 - I was dead set on also picking up the RC5 but, I've been so pleased with the RC4 that I don't see a need for the RC5 for me anymore.

If I had both I can already see the extra weight on the 5 making me opt for the 4 when choosing one to hike...

Regardless of what you choose though, I think you will be very happy and back for another (or two!)

I dont think you will be disappointed if u get an Ontario but I KNOW you wont be disappointed if you get a RAT. The RAT has a great warranty too.

Go to RAT's site and shop there recommended dealer list. There are several reputable dealers there and please remember, lowest price doesn't always mean the fastest shipping or best customer service.
