Well, for years I have wanted an Randall...today was the day. At a local show, I purchase a Stag model 19-5. I love it! One very important quesiton:

How do I know if I have Stainless or Tool steel? There are no markings in the blade.

I will say this...I cut a nectarine, salame and some cheese. The blade now has some clouding in the areas that touched the food. So, I would guess that I have the high carbon, not the stainless.

That said, any sage advice for removing the tarnish? I did some searching and found that many like to keep the 'patina' in the blade to protect from rust...

Thank you fellow Randall owners!

Anthony

Thank you for the clarification. After reading all of the posts with 'patina' in them, I now know everything there is to know about the care and feeding of non stainless blades.

What I cannot find is the type of steel that Randall uses for their tool steel blades. Or, is Tool Steel the name similar to D2 or 440C?

I have a #19 also and had a hard time deciding between taking it or my #15 with me to Iraq-the #15 won but I still miss the #19.

Anthony,
I tried to post a reply in your other thread but it was locked. Here is what I think we could do to solve your delima. I think that if you send me the knife and I sell it at the Chicago show you could use the money to have me make you a knife that you could use and is still beautiful. I have some damasteel in both rose and hapakalla pattern that I could use for blade and bolsters. I think that pearl would be the best handle material because it is not affected by moisture. I also have some beautifil desert ironwood.
Let me know what you think.
Regards,
Chuck

Randall uses O-1 for their carbon blades and (IIRC) 440B for their stainless. I really like Randall's O-1 blades and haven't had a problem with corrosion, but I keep mine lightly oiled. Hope you enjoy yours.
