I have to thank Mark Williams for giving me the idea for this one (and the next one, too), I had a few of these rasps laying around but, didn't know what to do with them. OK, time for honest opinions on my second tomahawk.

This tomahawk (forged from two farrier's rasps) has a double head measuring 11 1/4" across with the rough teeth still on the eye. The blade has "Moon & Star" cut-outs and light etch too bring out the steel pattern. The shaft is Curly Maple with burned star/random designs and a deerskin wrap and copper anchors. This 'hawk also comes with a fringed leather "bikini" sheath.

That's beautiful work, as usual! I'd love to see a spike hawk or a squaw axe made from the same material. Would you go into specifics about the construction, like, is there a bit welded in for the cutting edges?

Thanks Tom. There's no extra steel added to the edges. I made a test axe with the same rasps and it worked and held an edge quite well. I just put the two rasps together and forge welded one end to about the middle and then did the same on the other end (leaving the center unwelded). Once that was done I heated and put it up on one end and tapped it down on the other edge (kind a like hammering a nail) until the "eye" for the shaft opened up. I've got a germanic style axe I'm making out of another rasp next. Just finished HTing it.

That's just cool as heck J. The little blade sheaths add a great touch. I really dig the shape of the handle also. The cut-outs look neat. I'll have to try that some time. I wonder if Deb would get mad if I sat on the couch and whittled away with a file....hmm

Thanks guys. I wanted a little extra heft in the swing so I thought more wood (hence a larger eye opening) up top would help out. I wasn't too sure about burning the designs on the handle but, it didn't come out too bad. I just wish the photos were better. I'm going to have to build a bigger light box for camp knives and hawks.
