New RAT 1 kind of noisy while opening.

Hey so I have never owned one of these before and I am wondering if it's normal for the knife to make faint rubbing noise when opening? It was smooth and quiet as glass when I got it yesterday, but I am worried I introduced some grit into the pivot when sharpening because I use waterstones. I tried washing it out, lubing it up, and even just got done disassembling and cleaning and it's still kind of noisy when opening. Is that normal once it's broken in a little bit or do I need to take it back apart and figured out what's making the noise? It actually only seems to happen while closing if that means anything. Not a big deal at all but I was enjoying how smooth it was

That's a new one to me. You might want to put this in the "Ask Toooj" thread. Failing that, this is a very knowledgeable community and I'm sure they'll have some thoughts on this. I'm not in the factory today or I'd just go grab one and open and close it a few times to see if I notice anything like that. If it ends up being a problem or you need replacement parts, please email knifesales@ontarioknife.com

Mine developed just a very slight noise like that as well after carrying it for about a week or two. Most of my knives do. I work around concrete and saw dust, and I'm sure lint gets in there. My Rat 1 and my other knives all have it. Just the nature of having something mechanical. I've taken them apart and cleaned the lint and stuff of the pivots but eventually it returns. They all still flick open at the same speed as new and without any blade play.

I've thought about trying one of the oils out there that doesn't attract dust or anything. But laziness and convenience has always won for me, and I just end up using 3-in-1 that I already have if I feel like oiling them. That's really the issue. The dust gets mixed into the oil which then holds it near the pivot. Not a big deal but you can definitely experiment with some of those oils that supposedly don't hold onto dust. Or with some sort of dry lubricant.

Hmm think I won't worry about it then, I got all the grit out so I know it can't be that and that's all I was really concerned about, waterstone swarf is mean stuff. I don't wanna take it apart anymore then I need to though, had to try a few times before I assembled without blade play; it seems pretty particular about having the washers go back right where they were. I am pretty sure what I am hearing now is just metal-on-metal of the washers themselves so I am not worried.

Kenny did you forget to put the Teflon washers between the blade tang and the phosphor bronze washers?

I think I have them reversed, I have the bronze against the blade tang a Teflon against the scales.

I was looking at old threads on similar subject and they all mentioned 3 Teflon washers instead if 2? One side is supposed to have a bronze washer between two Teflon ones? Weird.

Its been working nice anyhow though.

I was just disassembling mine and I can confirm it had two teflon washers and two bronze ones. Teflon against the blade, bronze against the scales.

Thanks for the info
