Just got this today and am seriously impressed.

It feels absolutely amazing. There is no blade play in any direction, razor sharp, hair popping... seriously amazing

I am in love... the only thing I can think right now is that I had better order another.

I have been edc'ing the Buck vantage for a few months now and recently my brother got a Gerber Gator. I didn't care for the knife, but I have larger hands and it felt very comfortable... I started looking for something at a reasonable price that was larger... and after viewing probably 15+ you tube reviews, I decided to spend the 27 dollars and just check one out from amazon. I would have liked for it to be better steel and for it to be American made but, I figured it was worth the gamble.

As far as use goes, I am an electrician (often industrial work) so it could be as simple as opening and breaking down boxes to stripping wires, cutting tubing, reaming PVC pipe... etc. I don't do any bushcrafting with my folders or outdoor work other than minor whittling.

Now you have to google Custom Scales Ontario Rat 1 to see what people are making. With your skills you can make a custom handle that fits your hand perfect.

I have seen some really cool things out there. The only question now is whether to do micarta or G10.

Cool... They seem to be a great knife. Rarely do you ever hear anything negative about them, and you can't beat the price. I have had one in the back of my mind for a few years, but never get around to getting one.
Even though I have fairly big hands, I prefer my knives a little on the smaller side, so perhaps a Rat II

I think my next knife will be a RAT1. I have several smaller knives(leek/Mini grip) and id like a slightly larger(but not too large) one for edc rotation. Thats a hard knife to beat at its price point. Plus I love the design..just SIMPLE.

Just bought a Rat 1 myself. That thing is better than any $25.00 knife deserves to be. Excellent!

It really is an excellent knife, one of the best bargains you can find. The smooth frn handle doesn't tear up your pocket when drawing it out, yet the handle shape gives good grip. The blade sharpens easily to a razor like edge with solid lock up. Get one, you won't regret it, and at that price you won't mind using it.

Have you tried throwing it yet? From what I've read it is the only knife that Jeff Randall designed that was made for throwing. :)

I'm pretty picky about quality, and this is my favorite low-cost folder. When I don't feel like beating up an Umnumzaan, I grab this one almost every time. Great knife for the price. The idea of custom scales intrigues me..........

Congrats, OP! The RAT-1 is a great knife and one of the best values around, imo. I've yet to encounter a better locking one-hander for the money...

I don't think it's a good idea to throw any folder let alone a RAT-1. Where did you get your info?

Though Bryan looks new here (3 posts), he's probably referring to a long-running insider joke among RAT/ESEE fans. Jeff's company unconditionally warrants their knives, but he has some specific opinions about throwing them.

Jeff is very clear in his opinion about throwing ESEEs... ;) :D Hopefully, Bryan understands that Ontario holds the warranty on the RAT folders and was just being cheeky in his post... :)

I quit buying and carrying folders for awhile now but have to admit that the RAT1 keeps calling my name. For the money it gets great reviews I just can't get past the sole made in Taiwan thing but then again that's what makes it such a great value
. And yes was being cheeky DONT THROW IT :)
