Hello everyone I am a knife lover but no expert, I recently had the pleasure of going to Smoky Mountain Knifeworks in Gatlinburg TN. and picked up a RAT model 1 folder with partially serrated blackened blade. I gave 29.00 for it, and it seems like a well made very sharp knife for the price. I had never heard of this company before, I had previously carried a Gerber EZ out for a very long time. I have since read some bad things about the company on some boards. This knife was highly recommended to me by an employee. I have no complaints about it at all, like I said very sharp, am I missing something. It is the version that is marked Taiwan on blade.

Hello and welcome to the RAT forum.

Your knife is made by Ontario under the RAT brand. Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin, the owners of RAT, parted ways with Ontario a few years back and started out with their own line of knives, RAT cutlery, manufactured for them by Rowen manufacturing.

The bad things you were hearing were most likely spurred by the bad blood over some trademark problems left over from the split.

The Model 1 folder is a great design and most of the knives made were fine. Unfortunately, some have seen some quality problems since Jeff and Mike split from Ontario.

Congrats on your purchace, if your happy with it nothing else matters.

When your in the market for a quality fixed blade, check out RAT cutlerys offerings.

:grumpy: I spent a good 4 hours in that place not long ago and never came across that knife.

:D Welcome to Blade Forums, and all the flak you have been hearing is probably directed towards Ontario and not RAT Cutlery. Rat Cutlery hands down probably has the best or one of the best warranties in the knife manufacturing world.

Welcome to bladeforums and our lil' corner of it for all of us Rat Cutlery addicts!

Definitely check out Rat Cutlery when your in the market for a top-notch tough-as-nails fixed blade!

Heres something to whet your appetite :D

p.s. enjoy the RAT Model 1 folder! I've been looking to pick one up(off the 2nd hand market of course) just because Mike and Jeff designed it :p

Welcome to the RAT forum. I've been using a couple of the rat model 1's for a while now, thanks to a couple of rocking RAT family members, and I dig 'em. Even though they're made in Taiwan, I still think they're a great folder and they haven't let me down yet.
