New happy RAT owner here. I had purchased the "Ontario"(i know hold it down please) version of the RAT 7 originally almost a year ago and was sorely disappointed. Onward and upwards. I recently decided I needed a new camp/trail/everything knife to trial so I went for a REAL RAT knife and settled on the RC4. It seems to have the right length(not too short, not too long, just right).

I've been carrying it out on my day hikes for the last two weeks and just for field testing purposes used it to baton my way through a good 5" diameter downed white oak. I had not sharpened it yet on purpose and took it with me fishing this past weekend. It was still razor sharp and completely satisfied all my fish decapitation/gutting needs. YAY! ...and still pretty darn sharp. Oh and I can safely report that a 1' wide, pissed off snapping turtle failed to defile the blade or its pretty black coating.

So here's a question. Any of you folks used your RAT for fish work? I found getting rid of the fishy smell from the RC4 to be quite the ordeal. Warm soapy water got most of it, but not all, so I went right for the goods...Breakfree CLP. Gets my firearms done good...why not a knife? CLP did the trick. There's only one slight problem, that may not even be a problem. It seems to have changed the color of the micarta. Originally it was a lighter gray color, but now it's a nice darker charcoal gray. It's been almost 24 hours now and still rather dark comparatively speaking so I can only assume that this may be permanent:thumbup:. I did rub in a nice light coat of oil into the metal after the warm soapy water bath though:o

Dunno. The rc4 worked fine. It just stunk afterwards:eek: I suppose it's sort of a trade-off. The darker color is kind of growing on me

Yeah I was talking about the RC just the orange plastic handle one may not absorb the fish smell. Probably why ppl have 3 of the same knife :)

If you wash it again in HOT soapy water the handles will return to their factory color.
