I'm new to the ESEE forum, and it's been quite a while since I posted on bladeforums at all, but I sure as hell am impressed with Mike and Jeff and how they seem to be upfront and straightforward guys!!

With that being said, I am waiting on a new Ratpack with an RC-5 knife, which I know can take some serious abuse from everything I've read about them. The RC-5 is just the beginning of the knives I will be getting from ESEE as well, I am already on the pre-order list for a Junglas. Everybody in here seems cool, and also has some very informative information that I enjoy reading.

Hey now when you get it, I can't figure something out. Does the rat pack come with the standered kydex sheath that you bolt in? Or does It have a sleeve type thing? Welcome to the forum.

From the pictures on the Esseknives website, it looks like the Ratpack has a sleeve type sheath, I don't think it comes with any kydex sheath, like you would get if your just purchased an RC-5 outright.

I just got the kit with the 5. It does not come with the standard sheath. Just the sleeve inside the rat pack.

I've got a RAT Pack and RC5 also and the retention on mine if pretty tight. Without wrapping the handle with that shock cord, I could flip the knife/sheath upside down and shake it without it coming out. Now if I swing the sheath like a baseball bat, the knife might fly out, but for regular use it's fine.

Thanks 333rm, I'm looking forward to the Ratpack, RC-5, along with the ESEE ferro rod, and other stuff included with the pack. I'm certain I will be more than happy with it.

For everyone who has a Ratpack, how useful have they actually proven to be out in the woods?

I would be interested to hear from Ratpack users, too. I am thinking of getting one that comes with the ESEE-6 (RC-6)

I haven't heard of any substantial negative comments about the Ratpack, regardless of which knife you choose to get it configured with.

In fact the only complaint I read about is the weight of the Ratpack when you get the RC-5 knife with it, and that really isn't an issue for me. I would much rather have the burliness of the knife and deal with whatever extra weight comes with it, then not have a heavy duty working knife, and badly need one.

My Ratpack should be here by Thursday of this week.

The RAT Pack set up looks pretty cool to me. Congrats. You will love the RC-5 cause it is BAD, you'll see.

As far as the weight goes, who cares? With this knife coming in at around a pound you will know its there. Nice score man.

I don't know how "useful" my Rat Pack/RC-5 has been in the woods, but it has been convenient to me having so many useful tools in a small kit. I replaced the fire starter with one from BRTK and keep a Surelight in it's place in the pack, and keep my compass in the pack also...endless possibilities on how to pack your Pack. I sure like mine.
