Hello everyone,

Just noticed woodlore are updating their site.

Looks like they have added Ullfrotte clothing:)

Anyone know what happened to the handle on the woodlore knife?

They say the site will be ready sept. 16th, but judging by last time..

Hi Bushblade,

What do you mean exactly? to me it looks like the picture of the knife has been strechted/compressed a little for the picture, also the color of the handle is a bit off, strange is also that the firesteel is mounted upside down in the 'neck' sheath looks to me that it'll frop out if you don't 'fasten' it with the lanyard attached to the firesteel.

I have my Ray Mears knife made by a US knifemaker also in 5/32" O1 steel with traditional clay tempering to create a nice 'wavy' hamon and hard edge but relatively soft spine.
Best part it's a lot cheaper, about 50%.

Hi Bagheera

hhm, I just checked the pic of the knife again and its a different one from what I saw earlier:confused: it did have a handle that was sculpted differently, the knife was the other way round and had no thong hole liner, the pic was also angled so you could see the tang. But I see the price has come back down a bit. I think the firsteel can be placed either way up, depending on carry method.

Who made your knife for you sounds very interesting. With the softer spine is it still possible to use it as a firesteel striker?

Hello Will,

I still find 188.55 British Pounds including VAT a whole lot of money
Will, I enlarged the picture with the sheath and it looks like the thong hole still is lined with a bushing.

My knife will be made by R.W.Clark and the tempering will be done in such a way that the front part of the spine (near the knife point ) will be hardened for some 1.5" or so.
This will allow you to use it for scraping sparks.

Will, perhaps Ron could make another one, he already has my drawings etc.

Thanks for that Will, I had removed Ray's site from my fav's due to lack of intrest.... I have a lot a respect for the guy and his thinking, but the big commercial bus went passed a he got on:( I notice the price of Bushcraft has dropped in the shops (£18.99 to £12.99) and I cant wait for the DVD's to go the same way. I have told my wife to get me a £20.00 T-shirt with Ray Mears on it for crimbo:barf: .

Yeah, things are on the expensive side on that site. Over £21 for a Ray Mears T-Shirt... forget it.

You could buy a Bladeforums t-shirt and have it delivered for only $23.50 (£15.07)... much better and way cooler :)

I think there is more than one bushcraft knife. There seems to be a neck knife now as well as the standard belt one, ( it had a flat ground blade from what I can remember instead of the tradition Scandinavian grind ). The neck knife you could get from the Alan wood site set up by the BKG, but it has disappeared...hmm.

I saw that pic too on Alans site, it was full flat ground with no thong hole. I thought it was a very early version of the knife, but thats three different woodlore branded knives I have seen now, and Rays site says he has been using it for 12 years:confused:

Nick, ditto I feel the same.

I wouldn't buy anything from the Mears site, except maybe the book, ( I am happily working my way through Kephardt's at this time anyway ). The gear all seems to be over priced-or to put it another way, I can buy it cheaper elsewhere ;)

Woodlore knife? Not when I can get so many other good knives for less money-even here is the UK. I could get a Dozier from A.G.'s, pay the duty and tax and still save money! As it is I am happy with my Fallkniven's.

I've only seen Mears use the one with the Scandinavian grind on the tv, though I havent seen all of the programs. I dont think its a big deal anyway. The basic concept of a moderately sized belt knife has been around for long enough. Mears has his ideas, Kephardt had his, as did Nesmuk. All are different.

Hi Michael,

If you consider buying Ray Mears latest book, go do a search on Amazon.uk, I bought his book including postage costs to The Netherlands for HALF what he's asking on his own site.

I planned on buying the book from Ray himself but then just as I had the pound bills together he increased his mailing costs (almost doubled), I had a colleague in our UK office check the actual postage costs to the Netehrlands, they were a lot less so I decided to get it through Amazon, they delivered in 3!! days.

Guy's, I don't know if you ever watch or watched Country Track's on BBC two at the momment they are useing 10 minute gap fills at 9.50pm Last night Ray was on there ( It must have been an old one as he was looking younger and thinner....ahhhh those were the day's....)using what looked like a Stag handle version ?. Being a total sad case I will dig out the tapes that I have in the loft and check all of Tracks out.
