This probablly wasnt the greatest thing to do with a vanguard but I wanted to see what it could do if it ever had to be called on in an survival situation. To my surprise the vanguard s30v from Cabela's was able to chop a 1 inch dia. tree and also a 3 inch dia maple. Afterward the blade was still sharp , not as razor sharp as before but sharp. After a few minutes on a translucent stone it was back to razor sharp. Yep I'm the same guy who was complaining about my vanguard. I still may have to get the 119,105,102 rosewood handles from Bass Pro just for looks and temptation.

cool nice to know that it will do the job  ...only:(
we need picts!:D :D ugh ...clickable for trax too! ;)

If you hunt or fish, You may well want to pick up some of the other ones. Some work a tad better than others for different chores.

Lot of it is personal preference.

I hunt and fish. I'm sure I will pick up some more knives. You can never have too many can you. A translucent stone is an extra fine/hard arkansas stone. Normally when I sharpen a knife a use the hard stone and then the translucent to finish it off. If the blade is real dull I will start out with a soft stone, then hard, then translucent. I don't use translucent on all my knives just the ones I want razor sharp or to touch up an already sharp blade.
