I just ordered my 1st hinderer, boy these guys are hard to find! XM-18-3.5 bowie blade, I always wanted to own one of these over the years, any one no why they are so hard to find! I also noticed the Rick Hinderer forum is closed, just a couple of questions I had to ask, thanks guys.

RHK has actually ramped production way up in the past 2 years or so so XMs in general are available much more easily than in the past. but they produce in batches, that are planned some 9-12mo in advance. So if you wanted a specific blade style, and you miss a run, it might be a year or two before they are produced again. Shop only has so much capacity after all.

OP, Like you I got my first Hinderer this week. It is a 3.5 Wharncliffe, No Choil M390 from DLT. I remember a long time ago when it was almost impossible to get one or you would have had to pay double on the secondary market.

Mine is used and I took it apart to clean and lube it. It has the bearings in it and it came apart real easy and went back together real easy. I like to put a drop of oil on the screw threads since the fasteners are stainless and that can gall easy. If you are not going to get the Hinderer armorers tool then buy a #12 spanner bit as that is what the pivot nut is. You could notch a penny or screwdriver if have a dremel tool. I had a good set of Brownell's screwdriver bits so I found one that fit the pivot perfectly. The phillips screws are #2 if you are wandering.

One question I did have for the others "What is the lock stabilizer screw size? " Mine looked to be Torx and I know it was not 0.50, or 1/16" hex driver. I had a bad experience with a Spyderco Sage last week stripping out a stainless fastener so I ended up not taking that out to oil.

Overall it is a really cool knife. I think since it took me 25 years to get one that I really like it. Maybe waiting a while was good since the Gen 6 is out with the tri-way washers/bearings. My blade is well centered and the knife is very smooth. Maybe being used it was broken in a little.

I did notice the bearings cause a ring to wear in the titanium liner. I thought I read here where Hinderer seems to use a softer titanium and this will happen. The bearing in the blade did not leave as noticeable of a wear line as the titanium. I was going to use some Mobil 1 moly grease on the bearings but ended up using some other oil that I like.

Welcome and enjoy the new knife!!

On the newer knives this is T6. On older ones Allen/Hex, but you can use T5 safely.

No steel washers in bearing Hinderers ..... No problem though, since the wear ring is "self correcting": it progresses the slower, the deeper it gets; once the knife is broken in it shouldn't change anymore.

Roland.

I've been using mine and flip it constantly. After I put loctite on the screw (right after I got it) it had not developed any play or gotten looser. The grooves in titanium from bearings is pretty overblown I think. Plenty of older titanium knives with the bearings running on the ti and no problems.

Congrats, I'm still kicking myself for waiting to purchase a skinny slicer from DLT when they had tons in stock for a few weeks. When I went to finally order they were all sold out.

It depends. Some ZT 0562s developed a very deep bearing trace.

Yeah. I hesitated too until I saw only the ones with working finish and black g10 (no anodization) were left, and I grabbed one. Not my preferred color combo (battle blue with blue/black g10 would be sweet) but still better than missing everything.

I herd someone say, Wellcome to the rabbit hole, another hinderer incoming , xm-18 3.5 slicer blade gen 6 try way new in the box, only because I got a deal on it, I really didn't need another knife! but wanted to try there updated version ;) newer model and different blade stile and steel.
