This week I scored two Milsurps. A Mosin Nagant M44, and an Enfield #4 Mk1* from Longbranch. Woo hoo. The Enfield has been bubba'd and I've ordered the parts to restore her.

Ah, the milsurp bug bites. Beware, Andy, it bites hard- next thing you'll want is a Curio & Relic firearms license so you can start getting these great old rifles delivered to your home...

Pick up a copy of Shotgun News and start thinking about it. Mosins, Mausers & more to your door! The license only costs $30! Mine took like 3 months to come, though. Some people get theirs faster.

With the C&R, remember to sign up for another credit card, you'll need it.

Berdan ammo's cheap, a box of 20 reloadable is 16 -20 or more of course.

Hey Ad Astra; if I had a CR I'd spend more money. If I let my FFL do the work it slows me down just enough so I can maybe afford 70 percent of it.

It's not the most accurate milsurp out there but with good 180 to 200grn bullets, that M44 will pack a real good punch....................at BOTH ends. :)

That .303 Enfield is likely to be the more accurate of the two, but good ammo in .303 tends to be a bit high. Comparatively speaking.

Good solid buys in the milsurp market.

May I suggest the Swiss K31 and some GP11 ammo for your next purchase. You won't be dissapointed in performance, I promise.

I got a C&R license on the oft-cited theory that it's better to have it and not need it... It's a pretty easy process. The time-consuming part is waiting for it to show up in the mail (for me, about 5-6 weeks). I haven't taken advantage of mine yet. My wife is still not all that happy about khuks on top of cabinets, under the bed, in the nightstand...

(Nice looking finds, Andy.)

Thanks guys. Good advice is always welcome Lizardbone.

The forestock pieces for the Enfield arrived today. Now I'm must waiting for the hardware...

My first Milsurp was a No4 LE from Longbranch. That was back in the late 80's Still have it. Love those Lee-enfields I also managed to pick up an Aussie No1.
Did I mention I love Lee-Enfields :)

My only feeling is that someone should have 'bubbed one from another arsenal. Longbranches are just too nice for that type of procedure. But then again I'm probably extremely Biased.
send pics after it's been rehabilitated

I recently put my No 4 to the test at 600 yards and beyond. It's one of the best and most accurate rifles I've had. It will shoot exactly where you want it to, no recoil, lightweight, and it has to be one of the fastest bolt actions ever made.

If I were left with just the No 4 and a few bandoleers of full clips, I wouldn't feel bad at all. The flip peeps sights are all you really need.

Fully agree Although It pains me to admit it I think my Aussie No 1. may be a smidge more accurate than my number 4.
But any one of these two rifles and some ammo and you have a rifle that is to be reckoned with.

Long Branch, Ontario

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Long Branch is a former village that is now part of the City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The area is bounded by Lake Ontario on the south, Etobicoke Creek to the west, the Canadian National railway to the north and Twenty-Third Street to the east.

To the north is the subdivision of Alderwood, and to the east the [Town] of New Toronto. To the west is the City of Mississauga

In 1967, the Village of Long Branch was amalgamated with the Township of Etobicoke and the Towns of New Toronto and Mimico to form the Borough of Etobicoke. The Borough became the City of Etobicoke in 1984. In 1998, Etobicoke was merged with five other municipalities and the Metropolitan Toronto government to form the new City of Toronto.

Prominent reeves of the village included Thomas Berry, Len Ford and Marie Curtis, (1953-1962).

In the late 19th and early 20th century, Long Branch was a popular summer resort destination for Torontonians. The area was served by steamers that sailed from the foot of Bay Street. A popular summer resort, built in a pagoda style, was located at Long Branch Avenue and Lake Promenade, until it was destroyed by fire in the 1950s.

In 1954, more than 40 homes in Long Branch were demolished at the mouth of the Etobicoke Creek by Hurricane Hazel. To prevent any future floods from having similar disastrous results, houses from around the mouth of the creek were relocated, and the area turned into a park. In 1959, the park was named for Marie Curtis in recognition for her efforts to have it built. Adjacent to the park is a closed site which was formerly the Long Branch munitions factory during the 1940s. Huge quantities of weapons were manufactured there during the Second World War, such as the Bren, Sten and Lee Enfield. As of 2005 there are plans to incorporate the former munitions factory site into the Marie Curtis Park.

Thats cool. Its just sitting empty. Neato!

It's beautiful. Do you have the correct sling (yet)?

I know you have the bayonet. :D I got the Mk. 9 blade bayo for this rifle as well. Looks like a KaBar, but with no handle.

Mike

No. I don't have a correct sling for either... Got links?

:D

Depends on whether you want a repro, or a WWII one. I've gotten both and prefer the new ones to an old musty one on a rifle I actually shoot.

Either way, they're cheap. The Enfield repro sling was like $6; I actually put one on a Turk Mauser... partly because the Turks had a lot of Enfields after Gallipolli.

$10-12 there.

Sling shown looped over another rifle, a K98- which does have its own, correct leather sling with frosch.
