Just picked up an authentic Russian SKS the other day at the local gun shop I buy from... I was awestruck when I saw it in the shop and spent the last 260 of my 300 i had... I am feeling the returns of doing so right now... Eating Ramen noodles.... BLOWS!!! but the russian sks is amazing... when i get some batteries for my camera i will take some pictures and get it up herefor you guys.

Hopefully it is not a Saiga.
Does it have fully detatchable magazines ? or is it the PITA stripper clip kind ?
Pics please :D Your a lucky man , here in the Republik us serfs are not allowed to own such terrible weapons of war and bloodshed.

whats wrong with saigas? I was thinking of getting one of the 12 gauges

Several years ago I picked up one of them and took it to my cousings place in the country to test fire it. It staarted out ok, then after loading five rounds in the magazine I released the bolt when the gun went full aouto for two or three rounds. I'm glad I was not at a public range. If you do, only put two in the mag. at a time until you know it works properly. I also have an old chinese sks that went full auto all the time.

I posted a thread last year , mine blew up in my face. Don't know if it was the Wolf ammo or the Saiga , but I aint taking chances with either of them again.
Thankfully I didnt get hurt.

Gimme some pics reconseed !! :D

1. saiga is not a sks
2. russians dont have detachable mags, only sks-m and d's do. duck bill aftermarket mags suck.
2. if your sks is slam fireing clean the cosmoline out of the bolt

when our gpmgs did that, we called it a runaway gun
it's caused by the trigger sear not properly engaging the bolt
i presume it's the same problem with other open bolt weapons?

SKS is a closed bolt design FWIW, kabar could be right about the slam firing imho.

due to there easy conversion to full auto i dont think any semi is a open bolt anymore, those old open bolt MAC10s were sure cool though lol, and expensive these days,

Sticky firing pins with the SKS is a known issue---if you can't completely disassemble the bolt---soak it for a few days in gasoline or some similar solvent----the pin needs to rattle freely or you WILL get slam fires.

Indeed. Make sure the pin moves freely.

OTOH, the older, original Russian SKS's have a design feature that prevents slam fires. It is an extra spring that makes the pin return - if you are lucky enough to have gotten one of those... If not, there is an aftermarket US modification you can do to the pin that accomplishes the same thing.

Here you go, check it out: http://www.surplusrifle.com/reviews/lilmisspart2/index.asp

"...The original Russian SKS Type 1 firing pin had a firing pin return spring. This design allowed the firing pin to return via the spring to its rear most position and stay there until the hammer were to impact it again. Later SKS carbines and the one or ones most likely that you own, have a free floating firing pin that can float forward, lodge in place, and cause a slam fire condition when the bolt is slammed forward and the primer of the loaded cartridge is struck against the protruding firing pin..."

i have a chinese paratrooper SKS carbine with the short bbl, the SKS is a nice little rifle, i really prefer the AK line though, just a lot more versatile rifle imho.

not that the SKS is bad, mind ya.
