Just added a new SAK and light for EDC carry. The light works very well for it's size. Easily out shining the AA minimag. I havn't had the opportunity to use the SAK yet, but if it's anything like the rest I've owned and used, it should do an excellent job for me.

The knife is based on the Victorinox Trekker so they share the same tools. This is the German issue field knife and comes with the OD scales and the German eagle set into the handle.

Large locking, one hand open, partially serrated blade
Can opener with small screwdriver
Bottle opener with large locking screwdriver & wire stripper
Wood saw
Sturdy reamer
Phillips screwdriver
Key ring

The new flashlight is the Dorcy Super 1 Watt with Luxeon bulb.

What do you think about having a green knife out in the outdoors? If there was the option, would you prefer a more standout colour to easier spot your tool among debris/grass? My EDC light is a Pelican L1 LED with 4 button cells. I find it has decent output, and more importantly a managable size.

The green color of the knife doesn't concern me too much. I havn't managed to lose one yet by laying it down and forgetting about it. :D But I have dropped a couple out of a poclet and lost them, but if I do that, it won't matter what color it is. :o

Yeah, this light is only 3 3/4" long and 1" at the lense, so it's not a bundle of light to have to fool with. The only test I've read on them listed the battery life at 2 1/2 hours to 50% output with the original battery and I get the feeling that a better battery would extend that.

Longbow, may I be nosy and ask where you got the Dorcy light? It sort of looks like a new 123-cell model that suddenly appeared at Target. I've been thinking of getting one but for $20, I'd rather put that money towards a $40-$50 123-cell with a pocket clip...

MG_Saldivar, that is exactly where I got the light. I'd been using nothing but minimags, both AA and AAA. When I saw a review of this light I figured that someday I'd check them out and then while in Target, there it was and I happened to have a 20.00 left in the pocket, so I bought it.:D

Before buying an expensive light, check out some of the flashlight sites like flashlight reviews.

For a big box store, Target is a surprisingly good source for EDC gear. Like Longbow50, I bought the 1 watt Dorcy at Target. It is a great value for $20 and it is one of the whitest lights I own. To improve the grip, I slipped a piece of bicycle inner tube over the body.

Our local Target stores were clearing out the black colored Victorinox One Handed Trekker knives (similar to your German Army knife but with toothpick and tweezers added) for $12.48 several months ago. That's when I bought a few. When I carry the OHT, it resides on my belt in a home made bicycle inner tube sheath.

Good one. Funny, I use ranger bands for a lot of things in my gear, but have yet to use one as a belt sheath. Gonna give it a try.

Yeah, our Target put the Trekker on sale too, they just never had any to begin with, or I'd have snatched them up.

You guys are lucky . I can only shop at target on-line . I couldn,t come up with either item unless I wasn,t searching properly . Those prices sure are right .

Longbow50,

Great knife. I have an OHT and it's a nice carry for outdoors. As to flashlights, I really like Inova.

Stangely, I have a preference for the red SAKs, but the OHT is black.

:)

plowboy, all of my SAKs aside from this one and the older German issue knife are red. Just never had occassion to buy a black one yet I guess.

I looked at Inova while at target. They had batts in and could be operated right off the hook. They are a nicely built, ergonomic light. I bought one of their mini keychain lights that's got high and low power settings along with a strobe and it handles my low power needs just fine.

Longbow50,

Those keychain models are great little lights. I have a couple and have several different Inova 123 lights. My favorite is the 5 LED light that takes 2 123 batteries. It is a small and tough light with nice output and long bat life.

Good luck with the new knife and flashlights.

:)

Longbow,
I have the same knife and use it a lot. I did not have much use for the large flat screwdriver, since it didn't fit any screws I worked with. I sharpened it to make a chisel, similar to that on the Swiss Tool. The chisel is very useful making traps. The chisel is easier to use to tune a trap as compared to a standard knife.

I love that inner tube sheath for the OHT. Great thinking!

You can do this with a laynard and very bright cord, if you multi-color it then it stands out even more. I like the traditional bright red, it sticks out pretty easy on its own. Plus everyone "knows" its a SAK and not a knife, which is an odd distinction a lot of people make.

I also have a couple of OHT. Great design. I find it odd that the liner lock is a lefty . . . I reccomend the design to many of my lefty friends who work in the city. Precisely because people make the distinction between a SAK and a knife. I agree that's weird, but there it is, and if it gives us a chance to carry our tools without scary the non knife knuts, more power to us!

The inner tube sheath idea is great, so simple!
