New Salt-1!

Got the first PE Salt-1 that I saw at a shop a few days ago and am impressed with it. At first I got it mainly because it looked like a Delica with a sheepfoot tip, but then found out the H-1 steel is supposed to be essentially rust-proof(?) yet I think the HRC hardness is similar to, say, 440C? Sounds like a great deal to me!

There definitely are times a corrosion-proof (or highly resistant) blade really comes in handy, and though I live near the ocean, I don't necessarily go on the sea very often. Just cutting corrosive things when away from a convenient source of fresh water to rinse the blade off and not having to worry too much about it is a godsend at times.

The sheepsfoot tip is a great option. Though I like needle-sharp tips as well, at least with this tip there is no worry should you accidentally drop the opened knife that it'll snap off.

The action on mine is very smooth and unlike some smaller FRN-handled lockbacks, my Salt-1 pulls and snaps shut authoritively from an inch or more away before fully closed. (I have some similar-sized FRN lockbacks that, no matter how much cleaning/lubing, almost need to be pushed all the way closed). Though not a big difference in the utility of the knife one way or another, it just makes using (or just playing with it) a pleasure.

I guess this general rambling on is just a way of saying thank you to Sal and Spyderco for another great concept brought to reality.

You're welcome Jim, thanx for the comments. The H-1 is not quite as hard as 440C.

Hope you enjoy the piece. Creating the model did have its challenges.

James,

You are right - a useable, well done knife. I wanted to put one on my boat (all ocean fishing) but couldn't decide what blade. So I put both a plain and a serrated on the boat and we'll let the users (my fishing partners, grown children, etc) decide what blade is best. I imagine the opinions will be mixed and we'll just have to keep both blades on the boat.

Sal,
You did it again - nice results!

I will be getting a Salt-1 myself some time soon. Just thinking that a drop point fixed blade knife in H-1 would be a perfect fishing knife.

Thanks for the comments, everyone!
Methinks should the Salt-1 meet all expectations in the market (and no reason why it shouldn't) that it will only be the first of many knives with this steel option.

Although I got the PE version, I'm also thinking about maybe getting a SE version as well at some point ( love that Spyderedge!).

I have been very pleased with my Salt. The corrosion resistance seems to be nearly absolute, nothing I've done to me, which has been a lot, produced any sign of rust or discoloration. Even without that, this is a great new design! I think of it as a robust crossbreed of the Rescue and the Delica.

I've been carrying my Salt PE for a couple of weeks now. Edge is holding up well. Love the big opening hole - it's been as cold as -26F here and I can open without taking my big mittens off. Great all-round utility knife.

Is the clip affected by saltwater?

I have carried many a knife while wade fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and you wouldn't believe what salt water can do in a short period of time to a knife. I do have to say that Victorinox and some of the Spydercos seem to hold up well if you remember to wash them off with tap water when you get back. I like the looks of the Salt I and am thinking about getting one to have for next summer's trip to the gulf.

Got to quit reading this forum, you guys did it again. Ordered the Salt yesterday so I guess this summer I will put things to the test personally. I love the Delica and the Salt looks like it will be close to the Delica family.

As to why it's called the Salt-1, my personal guess is that there may be an Endura-sized Salt II (?). Probably also using the same Endura handle (as the Salt-1 uses the Delica handle design). But ultimately I think Sal will let us know one way or another.
