New Scales for an existing BM

My favorite knife is the BM Mini-Grip in D2. Does anyone sell kits to replace the factory applied scales? I realize that this would probably void the BM Warranty, but I'm not a big believe in warranties anyway. Besides, this is a tough knife.

It would be nice to buy some exotic scales and it looks as if the old ones could be easily removed with the proper TORX bit. I do not have the dexterity, patience, etc. to carve or work any materials so the scales would need to be exact matches.

Thanks in advance

Not that I know of :(
Well, the mini grip has full liners, a good thing. However the backspacer is a part of the scales. Which means one will have to be fabricated, or the scales will also have to integrate a backspacer (and thus be stronger).

Since you cant make your own scales, here are some ideas. You could grind down the textured portions of the scales and insert G10 or Kraton (or some other sort of rubber). I think this would be really neat and enhance retention really well.

Another option is to contact a custom maker (many hang out around here) and have the custom maker do the scales. It probably wont be cheep but it would be nice. Since the liners are nested, you have a ton of room for design changes on the scales. Eleminate or exagerate the swelling in the handle. Change the contour to better fit your hand, or to ride slimmer.

It sounds like a fun idea if you want to finance it.

Now, assuming you dont want to go though with this, the BM 707 offers very similar size and features to that of the mini-grip, but with a more elegant design. Also, there are a large number of limited edition BM 705s that have some exotic scale materials. These dont have quite as nice of a blade profile but are still well liked knives for that size. To be honest, spending 100-150 on one of these will probably be cheaper than custom scales for the grip.

contact Larry Davidson. He shortened the handle and replaced the scales on my CQC8. Great work and a great guy.

I'm in the middle of fabricating a set of solid purple heart (the wood) scales for my 705-BW. For this knife the scales are seperate from the titanium liners so the job is not that different from what you are describing. It's pretty easy and fun to do.

Personally, I would not be able to do it with less than 3 hours of labor under the best of circumstances.

... just not sure how any skilled craftsman could not loose money doing this kind of work.

I'm not much of a woodworker but I'm familiar with purple heart wood. Ironically, that is exactly the wood I had in mind when I initially started this thread. Maybe I need to disassemble my BM 555 (Mini Grip) and see just what it wood take....then maybe off to Rocklers.
