I was thinking about geting some micarta handle scales for my BK-15. But then i remembered i have a bunch of old moose bones in my shed.
So now i need some opinions as to what would be the best option.

Buying micarta, or custom making my own bone scales?

Got an opinion? Hit me:)

Be creative and try fabricating your own. Worst case scenario happens, you can always buy the micarta.

I would say try the bone, would make some awesome looking handles and you could end up with something that is unlike anything anyone else has, and like hawkhead said if you didnt like them you could get the micarta later

Buy micarta and ship the bones to me. :)
Unless you have other plans for the bones you could always try, if it doesn't come out right then toss 'em.
I'd do a little research about working with bone first though. I would imagine that bone dust would be a little bit hazardous and might require some extra precautions. But you might end up with some beautiful and truly unique scales.

I'd say, do the bone. I'd also say be careful with it. But that is going to be fairly awesome!

Oh, also, I was worried how you were going to do "homemade bone" then I realized moose bone...

I got a little psyched on the bone scales, so i started cutting and sanding to see what i had to work woth, but it turns out they just aren't dense enough. There's a thin layer of dense bone and then just some spongy perforated crap.
Big disapointment, but i'll snoop around and see if i can get hold of some antlers. They should be more forgiving when it comes to shaping them the way i want.

And with the money i might save i can get a BK2 instead :D

If it's micarta that you really want you could always make your own. I have done it before and I know some others here have done it as well. It's really not as hard as it seems. You just need the fabric you want and fiberglass resin. That may be a cheaper way than trying to have micarta shipped to Norway. No matter what you decide to do be sure to post some pictures! Best of luck.

I'd love to see some bone handles on a Becker! I haven't seen that done yet and think they would look good with a stripped blade. Carry on!
