I've only recently begun taking a serious interest in knives and have purchased a few nice customs at what I felt were good prices. I found an online auction for a knife that I knew nothing about, but thought I'd enjoy owning. It's a Schrade D'holder custom knife from the series of 5 designs that D'Alton Holder made for Schrade to produce in their custom shop to commemorate their 100th anniversary and starting in the year 2000. I did as much research as I could in the 2 days I had until the auction ended and I started making serious bids on the last evening. I'll say that I've been on the last minute losing side of some knife auctions, but I was hoping for my luck to change this time. Well, it arrived here yesterday and I'm just as happy as I can be to see it in person. It's what I believe is a Schrade D'holder from the '03 build, the fourth and last official D'holders before Schrade closed their doors in 2004. It is not a serial numbered knife (500 were to carry serial numbers) and there was no official paperwork or custom case as those 500 were to get. It appears to be one of the extras or overrun knives that they made in the event they were needed for warranty, etc.
If there's someone here who is familiar with these 4 series of D'holders by Schrade, I'm all ears (eyes) to take in any info that you might care to share; good or bad!
At the very low price I paid, it's worth way more simply as a Custom Schrade made before they closed shop in 2004. Not sure why I paid so little as I found many for sale, both serialized and not for way higher prices, but I'm surely happy it's mine. It's a bit over 8" OAL, 4" 440C highly polished blade with the etched "SCHRADE", but without the added etched "D'holder" that was part of the 500. Scales are jigged Ram's Horn with red spacers and tapered tang.
