On this forum there is a thread conserning old Schrade knives. I recently came across a webshop selling new knives of this brand. They are quite inexpensive, usually with delrin or "staglon" handles. Are these any good or should I steer clear of them? Some of those knives seem to have red bone or desert ironwood handles, or so they say on the website.

I have read that they are not made to same specs as the USA made knives, and the steel is inferior to the originals. I have never tried one personally, but a cheap knife is usually just that. ... FES

I've heard very variable reports.

The OT-3 lockback I have in Buffalo Horn is actually really well finished and is a more than decent knife. Other people have not been too pleased with other patterns however.

Just my advice. Means nothing really, save your money. For a few dollars more you can buy on online auction the real deal. Or buy a Buck brand.

I quess so. The Buck Canoe I just got is a very decent knife for the prize.

The so called “desert ironwood” in these type of mass-produced Chinese knives is also frequently advertised as “burlwood”.
It is definitely not a true desert ironwood.

i have a small 'imperial by schrade' in the trapper pattern with plastic covers. its ok. i use it for opening food at lunchtime or as a loaner. im not attached to it so if it gets lost of damaged i would only be out the price of a cheap lunch.

Haven't used it much, but for it's very low price, I was quite impressed by this Imperial Schrade Sodbuster.

I bought one of the new desert ironwood models. Looks great, I returned it because I was not looking for a mantel ornament, but a using knife.
