I was looking for a new knife and wanted to be cheap and i saw some schrade's with what seemed like nice burl scales, the action was so so, are they worth the admittedly small price? or would it be better to just save my pennies and wait for a case?

If you were buying a knife to beat the snot out of and didn't want to care about its welfare (as so many of my colleagues do) then buy the Schrade.

If you want a knife you can carry with pride that with proper use you will probably have a lifetime, wait for the CASE.

I'd buy a Rough Rider way before i'd buy a new Taylor made Schrade, much better built and cut like a razor. However you can get a Case sodbuster for around 25 bucks.

I think this depends on what "traditional" means to you.

If "traditional" implies a connection to the original country/culture of manufacture (e.g. Swiss Army Knives should be made in Switzerland, Opinels in France, etc) then be aware that several American "traditional" brands are manufactured outside of the US. Schrade (Taylor Brand), Camillus, Marbles are a few in this category.

Buck makes most of its knives in the US but some overseas.

Nothing I've said here has any bearing on the usability of any of these knives.

Even for a snot-beater, I'd still wait for a Case. Their yella CV models aren't that expensive.

This ^^^.
It really depends on your attitude about knives. If they're a disposable tool then by all means grab the RR or schrade.

If you can find an old Schrade for a decent price. Buy it. They are truly hard to beat. The new ones? Save your pennies and buy an old one.:D

I bought a couple of the new Middleman Jacks as gifts because I knew they'd probably be broken or lost. (One is currently missing in a pre-teens room)
They actually haven't been too bad. The fit and finish isn't up to speed with Case. But they're a lot cheaper.
I do agree with those that say if you can find an older one, go for it. The new ones aren't terrible. I've noticed the fit and finish on the Rough Riders seems to be better for the most part and they're around the same price.
I have a friend I gave one to as a beater and he's really happy with his Middleman Jack. He's used the crap out of it. It's developed a little bit of blade wiggle but he said that was after he did some digging with it. Not something I'd do with a pocket knife.
Are they great? Eh, not really. They're okay. I like the Rough Riders better. They just don't make a medium sized jack and that's what I was looking for.

I have not tried the new Taylor Schrades, so cannot speak from experience, but I do have experience with the older US made Schrades, and I wholeheartedly agree with Mack on this.

Rough rider makes a very nice 3 inch Barlow with a clip and pen.

The gifts were for my little cousins. They had seen me carry a Case Medium jack and wanted the same thing. The closest I could find was the Middleman Jack. At least the closest in a price range for kids that might break or lose a knife. Heh.
