Picked this up at the local antique place today, Handle (whatever) is is good shape, a little dried out but nothing a little BLO wont fix. Blade length is about 16 inches and 90% of the label is intact. The label says "Swift Cutter". So how did i do? I know nothing about scythes; mainly just picked this one up since the label was in such good shape.

Haha--wouldn't call myself an expert! I'm just a guy who knows more than most. That scythe looks like it wasn't used much at all, and the snath looks like a fairly tall one, if I'm gauging the scale right--a big plus. The wood all looks to be in good shape and I reckon that the moving steel components will all still adjust as they should! Looks like a nice stout li'l bush blade on it as well. All in all it looks like a very good snag! If you don't mind my asking, what did you pay for her? Also, do you have any photos of the ground-facing side of the mounting collar? I'm guessing right now that it's a Derby & Ball or a Seymour but wouldn't be able to say without seeing the "guts" side of the collar.

Isn't that the definition of "expert", knowing more than most? The snath is 63" tall and here are two more pics of the bottom:

I have not tried to loosen any of the bolts or clean anything up yet but it looks like it was probably stored out of the weather and the threads look to be in good shape

that looks like a seymour to me. I have one that looks exactly like that attachment rig.

Yup. Seymour for sure. :) Have a pic of the label on the scythe blade? Also, if you remove the blade from the snath you may find a stamp on the tang.

Ooooh man you scored a nice blade on that one! North Wayne Tool/Little Giant blades are NICE. Fine examples of good ol' Maine craftsmanship. :D:thumbup:
