Antone else cathc the season premiere of Man vs. Wild on Discovery Channel last night?

Bear Grylls has switched from his Cold Steel folder to a Buck Zipper.

You even clearly saw the Buck logo on the sheath.

The choice of a gut hook on a survival knife surprises me too.

But then not too much that Bear Grylls does should surprise. Little rhyme or reason to some of the stuff he does.

Yeah, weird choice in knife. Maybe he thinks the hook is useful for misc stuff. Grylls is like watching Carnosaur, or Octopus. Douchey B movies that are so bad they're good.

It's not a bad knife. though I wonder if he switches knives to emphasize the importance of having some sort of cutting tool handy at all times.

he busted up some chirt in one epi. use a chip for a knife to cut up a rattler he found under a log...god love his little retarded heart. he's gonna end up like steve irwin and the goofie bear watcher guy.

For a show about "survival", I, too, was surprised that he would choose a specialty hunting knife with a gut hook since the Vanguard is also available. For his needs, it seems like the gut hook would always be getting in the way.

What I think Bear is getting at by having the buck, or any knife with him is that it's good to have a knife with you at all time, "A" knife is better than no knife at all. I do agree that the guthook didn't serve any purpose, but some goofball in FL walking around in the everglades could be doing the same thing.

Bear IMHO is better than Survivorman, I use to watch him alot but he sometimes has gear galore, Bear is using just the essentials. He does have good ideas, and alot of it the public should not try unless it's aboslutly nessisary. Bear supposidly has a knife made for him that he is suppose to be carrying, just didn't see it in this episode, check out www.beargrylls.com to see the knife info

I thought it was nice to see him using something that alot of people have. Even non-knife knut people carry knives with gut hooks while hunting. I think given some time he could have used it for something.

That was my impression. The last episode from last year, I believe he was using a large swiss army knife with a clip point blade. He makes a point to say that a knife is one of the things he always carries. "The only thing I have is a knife, flint and water bottle."

Maybe use the gut hook to cut a line or vine, if needed? Hay I'm new to this stuff. I carry a knife to cut someone out of a tangled rope or tree. Kayak rescue.

Thanks for the heads up. I watch both shows occasionally. It will be interesting to see if he continues to use a Vanguard the rest of the season.

Mike, I saw the episode last year where he used an SAK. Kinda cool to see responsible knife use on mainstream TV.

I noticed he usually carries a metal cup with him as well... very handy item to boil water when the water is not from a trusted source. And, you can make herbal tea.
