Hi,

I just received a new sebenza from a dealer, and I'm wondering if these knives are supposed to be brand spanking new out of the box or is it normal for there to be debris and excess lube (?) on the body/blade?

Thanks.

Qtip will fix that.
Mine have all been heavily lubricated and clean out of the box.
To answer your question.
Debris: No
Lube: Yes

Debris definitely shouldn't be on the blade, but excess lube has been pretty common as of-late. I received an umnumzaan a few days ago (that I returned for a different CRK) and it had, what seemed like, half of the bottle of grease already used on the blade.

My guess (pure speculation) is that the dealer you bought from has a brick and mortar shop and that knife was on display and potentially handled quite a bit.

Mine have all been cleaner out of the box than they ever have been since...except possibly the one that went through the laundry...that puppy was spotless when it came out:)

Yeah, that one looks like it was played with, then some lube pumped in when it was boxed back up. None of my NIB purchases have looked that way.

But, if the knife looks good otherwise and functions ok, I'd just wipe it down and use it. Perhaps send a note to the seller letting him know in the event it wasn't him that left looking like that.

This, maybe contact the dealer and ask if it was a display place. I know my local shop puts customer satisfaction first so getting a mint one shouldn't be an issue.

My new CRKs have not looked like that! Having said that, if it looks good otherwise, and has good blade centering, I'd keep it. Grime and grease is a minor detail easily fixed. Other defects are not.

I would agree unless he bought it as a collection piece that he never intends to use. (that would be a shame not to use it, but some people don't, and I can see that sort of buyer wanting to recieve a pristine un-pawwed piece).

Otherwise, I would wipe it off and pocket it;)

I know some stores will do a function check of their own before they send anything out. So it's possible that there was some light handling. I would say, if you aren't satisfied, send it back for a replacement. However, a little handling on a CRK is a drop in the bucket and won't matter in the long run.

Enjoy it!

Agree that it might have been shown
If it is just a little dust and grease-wipe it off and move on with your life. It won't be the last time the knife needs to be wiped down.

Good decision op, anything you don't like about a new high end knife just return or exchange it. This is your only chance to do so before it's used, get one you are happy with. :)

I agree.

It probably is just dust, but the fact remains that it's not the same experience I had with any of mine, and your mind could wander a bit. knowing it is right is the peace of mind you paid for.

My 25 carbon fiber looked just like that. When i got it a few months ago.
I just brushed it clean.

A few days latter i noticed the blade was off center, so i took it apart and one of the f.in screws sttipped.
I had the allen erench fully seated at it just rounded off. I sent them a email and am still waiying for a response.
I just want them to send the screws. I dont feel like waiting a month for the turn around especially on a new knife.

Not sure how long you have been waiting for a response, but if it is more than a coupe days, give them a call. I am pretty sure they will send you some screws.

Ive been using the knife, i finally just sent them a email last week.
Ill call them this wed/thur if i dont hear back from them.

I've bought $8 knives that were cleaner than that out of the box. I would have shipped that right back to the dealer.

My most recent Sebenza was really caked in CRK lube and it was super smooth right out of the box but that picture there is more than just "dust", it almost looks like it was carried. Good move on sending it back to CRK and I'm sure it will come back looking fresh as a daisy.

I wouldnt have stripped my screw if the crk allen wrenchs actually fit tight.
The 5/64 have alot of wiggle room. Compared to a 2mm allen.
