Hey guys! I got my new decorated sebenza today and I have a couple of questions...

1) the lock is a little tough to disengage. Is this because it's a new knife?

2) The blade opening action is also a bit tough, especially to start out the opening motion. Should I loosen the bolt? Or grease it? It's to a point that the thumb stud almost hurts my thumb.

3) My decorated sebenza's handle isn't as shiny as the picture show decorated ones to be. Is this because the light reflects of the handle? Should it be kind of dull looking?

But besides these, I love this knife! It's soooo sharp. Hey, I once heard something about a corner or a piece of paper being sut off or something that you can do to show off to friends. What is that all about.

Anyways guys, any input would be helpful. Thanks.

No you should not loosen the pivot screw. Loosening the pivot screw probably will have no effect on the action anyway. You can try greasing it but most likely your technique may be wrong. Try swinging the blade out by pushing the thumbstud away from the handle rather than upwards. Also try to not push down on the stud.

I'm not sure about your other questions so I'll let someone else answer them.

Humpty,
Don't loosen the bolt, as a matter of fact always be sure it is snug or damage may occur.
I received a small Sebenza that felt gritty in operation, a little lube on pivot, washers, lockbar ramp and end of lock made it perfect.

Of the decorated I've seen, the handle is just polished, not a "shiney chrome" surface, just polished titanium.
Looking forward to seeing your posted picture of it.
Welcome to the fold!

What kind of lube do you recommend? And where can I get some? Is the stuff in th BF Store any good?? Or does Chris have stuff specifically for his knives? Thanks for the info

Humpty,
yes, the lock is probably difficult to disengage because the knife is new. When I first got my small sebenza, I also had a difficult time disengaging the lock. I actually ended up using the flat of my thumb nail to sort of pry the lock. However, after a couple of weeks of playing with the knife, I found that lock "loosened" up enough where I could close it the proper way without any extra difficulties.

Humpty,

I highly recommend the Chris Reeve Flourinated Grease. It makes my sebenza silky smooth. It does have one drawback however, it is too thick to use in knives you cannot disassemble.

Humpty,
I use RemOil for the plade pivot, the spacer the blade spins on. Just read in another post that Microtech uses it exclusively.
For all other areas I use Rig +p Stainless Steel Lube.
To me both work fine, but I do lube more often than probably is necessary.

Actually I use these products because I had them left over from cutomizing and using a Colt 45ACP and other pistols.

If I didn't have a ton of lubes around, I would order the CR lube that comes highly recommended!

I just want to re-iterate a few points that have already been made on this thread. Barring very few exceptions (because, after all, we are not perfect!) no knife leaves our workshop with a mechanism that is stiff. The most common reason why people find that the blade is stiff to open is that they are trying to push down on the thumblug instead of using a sweeping sideways motion. You need to place your thumb beside the lug, not on top of it, and push sideways.

Having said that, I know that many knives change hands in the second hand market and we cannot account for whether these knives have been worked on, disassembled and then re-assembled with a minor problem, whatever.

All knives leave our shop lubricated correctly and lubricating the knife is not always the solution to the problem. We use and recommend the Fluorinated Grease that we show on our website because we feel it is the best product available for our knive.

If a knife has not been bought new (either from us or a reliable dealer) and the mechanism feels stiff but you are opening (and closing) the knife correctly, the send the knife back to us so that we can check it over! For a small fee, we will ensure that the knife works the way it is meant to!
