Hey. I have a Fallkniven F1 that had a few tiny chips in the blade (chopping rocks = ineffective) and I needed to sharpen it. Well, my sharpmaker was of no use due to the marvelous convex grind/edge. So I tried laying down some 1000/1500 grit sandpaper down on a mouse pad and went at it. Good gracious, it worked absolutely fantastically. I now have a like-new convex edge that is fiiiinely polished. If you haven't tried it, I would recommend it. Even if you want to get a convex edge on a regular folder or anything else, its a really satisfying experience...especially as a break from a 25 page term paper. I think I need a WM1 and an A1 now.

Hey, does anyone know where online I could get some good quality sandpaper for something like this? Preferably some higher grits? like beyond 2000? Thanks

Go to www.leevalley.com Click on woodworking, then sharpening. They have the ultra-fine Veritas honing compound (0.5 micron) and, if I recall correctly, some paper that is already impregnated with honing compound.

Yep, that's the method I recently used to tune up a few neglected knifes that were lingering in a drawer... I used 240 to begin with; working my way up to 1200. I did notice however that the edge I got this way was sharp; yet SO much polished that I decided to gently "roughing" it a bit against a sharpening stone, to make the edge a little more "aggressive". Mind you, the edges on these knives were totally gone; you couldn't cut butter with it anymore.

Nice to see more people have thought of this rough, but effective method.

Lee Valley has some very high count grit sandpaper sheets here http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.asp?page=33004&category=1,43072&ccurrency=2

To quote that page, "The 15 micron (approx. 1000x) removes steel quite quickly; the 5 micron (approx. 2500x) refines the edge to usable keenness; and the 0.5 micron (approx. 9000x) gives it a mirror finish."

What a GREAT way to refine my NEWBIE skills. NOW what is "PSA backed" mean in regards to "Plain"....Thanks.....wolf

PSA stands for "Pressure Sensitive Adhesive". for adhering to disk sanders, etc. increases cost but very handy.
