Hey all,
I love my sharpmaker, but I have always had problems getting my Camillus edc as sharp as other blades (recurve probs). So I am touching it up and not getting the best result and I put the stones at 20 degrees, flat side in and sharpen like normal except intead of running it along the flat, I run the blade along the edge...angling the blade slightly at an angle. I feel a pretty good bite as I go. 15 strokes later, thinking I am going to be disappointed, I try to shave the back of my hand and the knife has never been sharper. 15 strokes the same was on the whites, and this thing is cutting hairs on hairs, I mean SHARP SHARP. Just thought I would share. Peace, Josh:eek:

I have trouble getting a edge on a recurve also and I am having trouble understanding what your saying. There are 40 and 30 main degrees on the Sharpmaker. How did you achieve 20? And your saying use only the pointed sides right? Not the smooth sides. Thanks!

I use the corners almost exclusively on the sharpmaker for plain and serrated [others have serrated, I don't ].

Flats for knives that are longer, it gets an edge quicker on these as there is more surface for the blade to run over.

Sorry if I didn't explain it right. When I say 20 degrees, I mean 40 (20 per side).
So I put the flat side facing inward, but instead of using the flat surface, I angle my hand so that i run the blade down the edge closest to me. If there was a line in the air going straight up and down exactly between the two stones, the tip of my blade would be pointing towards it as I go downthe edge of the stone. I hope I am making sense, 'cause this worked so well, I could not believe it. I actually don't use my edc that much because I haven't been able to get an edge that I like on it...well that has changed. It is now as sharp as my BM 705 (a knife that is so unforgivingly easy to sharpen, that even I can make it scalpel sharp). Hope that helps, if not let me know and I will try again. Josh

With any recurve edge, you should be ONLY using the corners of the stones--not the flats. Don't use the flats at all.

Not necessarily true. The only requirement is that the flat side be narrower than "inside" of the recurve. I sharpen my DDR small Apogee (~3¼" blade) using a DMT diafold, which is much wider than the flats of a Sharpmaker stone.

I do the same thing newknifeguy does for recurved blades, except as I near the tip, I re-angle my hand so that the blade engages the flat again. So I'm using the corner during most of the edge, and near the tip I'm using the flat, so the tip doesn't slip off and get rounded.

Cool, I gotta try this with my Arc-Lite. I can never seem to get the back recurve quite sharp enough. Thanks for the tip, Josh!:)

came so dull, they would not even rip the hair on my arm. Now, for the first time, I have been struggling with them, trying to get them sharp on my Sharp-all. The first night I just kept making bigger burs, and last night I went through the appropriate practice AND this idea and I STILL cannot get these knives sharp!

I have never had this problem with the many others - what am I doing wrong AAARRGGHH

I even went through Joe T's articles and tried that ....

Maybe I just need to clean my stones again???

Although I only use the Sharpmaker fot "touch-up".., I also use the edges for re-curve blades...
