other than the brown and white stones that comes with it, what other stones are a must?? diamond x tra course??

i have an extra course or course (cant remember and its blue) DMT diamond stone at home.. not sure what i would need extra to go with the sharpmaker.

btw i have a strop

You have all that is necessary. You can reprofile with the DMT (Blue = Coarse 325 mesh) and match the angle of the Sharpmaker by resting the DMT against the stones. You can go straight from the white Fine stones to your strop, but the UF stones are a nice addition before final stropping. If I was itching to add something to the mix I would go with the UF stones first and then either the Spyderco diamond stones or a DMT XC (220 mesh) or DMT XXC (120 mesh).

Does ultra fine make it look shiny? or does it just sharpen it?

Plus, I don't really trust my hands to hold perfectly vertical--so in reality, does the sharpmaker leave a straight edge or a curved edge?

Also, does ultra fine make it sharper or everything? or does it only help for softer materials, but get duller for harder materials.

The ultra fine will make a knife sharper if you have a fine enough edge on it before you use it.

There is nothing wrong with using a sharp knife, it won't mean you are worse off than using a dull knife. Even if it looses some of its edge, it will still be sharper than a knife that started out dull and lost some of its edge.

Where you might find issues are when the edge is too THIN for an application, then you might have been better off having a THICKER edge, but neither of those has much to do with sharpness.

I would guess you can improvise and make your setup work very well. Combining DMT and Spyderco is the start of a great team!

I have found the Lansky Eraser block a welcomed addition to my Sharpmaker.

It cleans the stones quickly and brings them back to life when they get clogged.
