So while this has probably been done before, I have not seen it. This is our first attempt and I am looking for honest feedback (you want hurt my feelings). The concept is simple. We have cut a notch in the kydex that has a dual purpose of a drain hole and also a spot to slip through paracord or other thin/small obects for quick and easy cuts. While I think there might be some real world use for this concept, I am wondering what you guys think. Any feedback at all would be great.

This is for the production Kephart and is the entire sheath with knife

Close up of the slot for drain hole and quick cutting with slight section of blade exposed:

Sized to fit para cord:

Seemed to cut well with just a little tug while still on my belt:

I've done quite a few kydex sheaths and that looks like a cool feature. Here's the "but" .. but something tells me that it may detract from the rigidity / integrity of the sheath to protect the knife in something like a fall. I'd almost want to make an add on accessory to a sheath that mounts like a firesteel but consists of kydex, holds a standard razor blade and has a notch similar to that.

I bet I could find a way to cut myself with it. But I admire your spirit of experimentation.

SOG did this years ago with their SEAL pup, it's easier for me to draw a knife and cut cord than to release a sheath or contort myself to get the cord to the sheath. I felt it was a bad solution for a mostly non-existent problem... Just my two cents

If it didn't cut me somehow, the blade would get damaged. I like the idea of the razor blade in kydex accessory idea Warrior108 put forth. Cheap and easily replaced.

I like the concept, it seems to like it would be quite practical. It would make cutting fishing line quite easy.

Thank you guys for the great feedback. I am always tinkering with something and this was part of what I was messing with today. We are going to give these away with production Kephart purchases. We made a few of them trying to hone in the idea. The holes fit large tek locks. I will put it on the site shortly and take down the included free kydex sheath when we run out.

i like my idea i called you about a few months ago :)

I would be worried about my kids cutting themselves if I had it on my waist.

Cool idea. I think I've seen it before, but it is still a good feature.

I personally would not be interested in a sheath that exposes the edge like that even for the advantage of being able to quickly cut something like cord or fishing line; I would rather just draw the knife, cut what needs to be cut and re-sheath.

You can't please everyone.. I am sure there are others out there who will disagree with me.

Cool and innovative approach though!

Unless your kids have the tiniest fingers in the world, I do not think that would possibly be an issue. The exposure of blade is very very minimal and the cut out is just thick enough for para cord. The real concept was to work a drain hole that could possibly have a dual purpose. Without seeing it in person I can certainly understand your concern.

We throw a lot of things out there. Most do not stick, but we have fun trying!

Thanks for your feedback. It honestly seems to be the general consensus. I think most people who use their knives enough develop muscle memory. Every time something needs to be cut, they don't think about it, they just draw the knife.

My Kids usually run up and hug me, the little one comes up to my waist and it's her ears that I would be worried about getting nicked.

I'll echo what Mistwalker said. I have a Seal Pup and a Tech Bowie with a similar feature.

Never used it. The whole theory and application thing.
I did always worry about cutting things by accident. Like seatbelts, dog tongues, jackets, and the like.

With that being said. I like the fact that you guys are trying different things. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained"
I have liked the whole "USA" idea since the get go to.

For faster string insertion the notch could be a bit wider at the beginning. Once the cord is in there it'll find its way thus the rest of the notch could stay small.

I did a different combo (Camp w/ BCK) a few years ago, but there's lot of large knife/ small knife combos I'd love to see.

Dog tongue gave me a good laugh on this one! Something to think about though.
