Looks great Brian, nice job. I make that type on occasion for larger knives. Here's one I made for a rehandle job. I made a crossover keeper because it had a guard.

Very nice, but you might want to run the snap strap towards the rear next time, that way it doesn't come unsnapped walking past an obstruction that he might rub against, asssuming he's wearing it on his right side.
Same for a type with a guard. Have the snap come over the front, or top part of the guard, not forward from the bottom part like Randall still does it. Never could figure out whey they persist in making their sheath straps that way.:confused:

Not a criticism, just an observation.

thanks for the tips! The idea with the excess is sort of like a thumb break for a quick draw ;)

I'm referring to the direction of the "excess". The strap opening is pointing forward, and can catch on anything, unsnapping the restraining strap, and possibly allowing the knife to get lost.

Reverse the direction(so the excess points to the rear) so only a smooth front is presented. Nothing to catch, and come unsnapped.

yeah thats a good isea, but this is a combat knife, and this sheath is right handed, so gives a quicker draw, and is easier to unsnap. ive made many sheaths like this before, and never had trouble with it unsnapping, even in heavy brush!
blgoode, what is the leather you used? vegtanned? latigo? what oz.?

its veg tanned 8/9 oz shoulder. I had to stack the welt up 3 layers high near the throat. I really like how this sheath turned out.

I'll try the next retainer the way you mentioned Mike. I was also thinking at some point this sheath may be worn vertical on a shoulder harness if needed.

Good job, someone should realy enjoy those.

For the environment, the snaps are probably a pluss, but for my personal use I love a pouch sheath, no snaps to hang up, come loose, ect.

That said the one I'm working on now is getting something similar with snaps. A lot depends on the knife and where and how it'll be used.
