Hi Guys,
Thought I'd post a few pictures of my shop. Been working on if for a few weeks. I started with a very cluttered basement, now I'm about 90% to where I want to be. Its wired, the lighting is complete, and the majority of the machines and tools are in place.

Still need that Grizzly lathe/mill combo though. I haven't decided to pull the trigger on that one yet. I'm still waiting to see if I get any feedback one way or another from you guys. Also, My 2"X72" Grizzly grinder/buffer is on back order. It'll be here mid-November. I'm still building the air handling unit at work, and plan to install that early next week. You may see that I hung up a few pictures of some knives I saw here on the forums for inspiration.

Thanks for looking. I'd like to see some more of your shops too! Post away.

Very nice and clean shop. I wish mine looked that good, I would show pictures of it. Now get to work and make some mess!!

Well you get the prize for neatness thats for sure.. One tip ..Paint your walls bright white it will help a lot. I'm in a basement as well and it made a big difference for me!!

Mine looked like that once.. for about 10 mins.. long enough for me to get some pics first !! :)

Lookin' good! One safety suggestion though. You may want to put something soft behind that buffer to catch anything it throws so it doesn't richochet off the concrete wall and into you.

'Shop' means not a shop for sale but the factory for making. I've misunderstood it. Anyway too clean to rise the dust for making something !!! My shop is almost trash box.... I expact that you would be a excellent maker surely.....

Wow,,,,, with and office.....I mean shop that clean where is the secretary!!! you are well organized.... I need your help. I tried to clean one table and lost stuff... so I left my mess alone....... How can you find anything?

I like the fact you have a fire extinguisher.... Is that carpet on the floor? At some of my stations I have that thick rubber mat like in a kitchen for foot fatigue....helps too..... and so the mountain water I keep in the shop too... btw, I keep that stuff far away from my forge!!!!!!!

Nice shop dude....

awww...... my big problem is all the belts.... you collect many of them and how to store them so you can also go through them...... has been a thorn in my side. Get a ceramic platen from Darren Ellis for the flat platen on the Grizz. I did not see a respirator for ya.

When I went to tech school in the early 80's my two instructors were fanatical about cleanliness and organization! My first job in a machine shop followed. Again, the owner was a neat freak. He would not tolerate a messy work area. I actually saw him get in a fight and fire a guy once over that. My next 6 years were spent in the U.S. Navy. If you can find a bigger neat freak then Uncle Sam. Well, I WOULDN'T want to meet him! I guess it all kinda stuck.

I have a respirator and dust mask. Its not in the pics, but I use one religiously. We get fit-tested and a physical for them once a year where I work. I'm just putting the finishing touches on everything. Ready to start production soon!

maybe that is another reason I have a messy shop.... being an Army Nurse I have to be sterile, clean, and organized.... especially on a cardiac floor. Maybe that is my disorganization in my life... I hear ya about the military.... you miss it? I gotta go and work now... later...

Hey Dan,
You make some really great knives. I've gotten alot of inspiration from your posts here, and the pics on your web page. Thanks alot!

Do I miss the Navy? Yes and no. I miss the guys I served with. I miss the discipline in the workplace. I miss the responsibility and "can do" attitudes.

I don't miss the Middle East. I don't miss 6-9 month deployments away from my family. I guess that's what helped me make up my mind. My wife was pregnant with our daughter at the time, and I just couldn't bear the thought of leaving her (them) again. I had already done two deployments to the Gulf and it was just a matter of time before another would come around.

Most of the guys I work at with my power plant are prior service though, so (other than being able to go home every night), sometimes it feels like I never left!

Thanks for posting the shop pictures. I'm in the process of laying out my shop so I love seeing pictures of shops in use. I want to see how the makers have the equipemnt in their shop laid out and what equipment they have. I had the opportunity to visit Mike Miller outside of Oklahoma City last week and see how he is set-up. He showed me a few tips of the trade....Thanks Mike.

Thanks alot for the encouragement guys! Can't wait to get started making some knives. Life keeps getting in the way of me finishing that shop though. I just finished two days of putting a roof on my mother's garage. My hat's off to anyone who does that for a living!

A little time here and there goes a long way though. I hope to finish up the air handling unit about the time my 2X72 grinder arrives. Those are the last two pieces of the puzzle until I take the big plunge and spring for a milling machine and lathe. Who am I kidding, this shop will never be done! I'll always be adding something, the same way most of you guys are, right!
