New, slightly different Desk Scalpel.

My latest piece is a slightly altered Desk Scalpel.

The knife is Damasteel, with bronze details.

Olive Wood make up the base for the stand, bronze holds the knife with a small but strong magnet, and a little leather detail covers the point of the blade. The stand has thin leather underneath to avoid scratching any potentially delicate surface it might stand on.

Each bronze detail has been finished with two different finishes for a slightly contrasting effect; part polished and part “brushed”.

Absolutely beautiful work as always! Can't wait to see what comes next!

Absolutely wonderful piece, Magnus. I still have wonderful, fond memories of your first desk scalpel! A gorgeous stand and another effective use of magnets.

I really like that! The stand is just as good as the knife, i love the little leather shoe. The subtle touches are very classy, such as the polished bolster area.

I absolutely love this knife. When I remodel my office, I might need to add something like this as a finishing touch!

....Time for me to chime in.

Magnus' work never ceases to pull me in closer. Many of you agree.

Here's the first iteration of his Desk Scalpel he created earlier this year:

I liked the concept and realized how often I would use a well-made cutter in my office. I have a ten year old Laguiole fixed blade for my office needs, and wished for something more representative of our world.

I contacted him, and Magnus and I shared some emails and ideas. Many small and important design changes:

  • Longer, thinner blade, capable of the letter opening tasks which is inescapable.
  • Because of the added length, a protective foot was needed to rest the tip. This is entirely his brainchild, and I love the leather 'shoe' as it was referred.
  • I found the three flutes too busy, can you make it two? Sure. How about we polish in the center? Excellent!
  • Magnus suggested an overlay on the handle which shares the style of the fluting. Notice how he extended this styling to the base, too.
  • He gave me a sampling of five exotic woods, and the Olive wood looked warm and not too busy. Choice made: Yes, that sure works!
  • The magnet holder brings it into the 21st century yet the concept has 16th century feel.

I'm VERY pleased. As you can see, I will be hard pressed to show this one any better. Magnus does all things well.

Thank you! (It's not here yet, however, I will return to this post to review.)

A great piece for the desk Coop. As usual, Magnus has done a fine job and has given Coop something really exciting to look at and use daily.

Magnus, once again your powerfully creative mind realizes a functional object of desire. This one with some aura of Coop infused. As always, details and more details. A real beauty!

Coop, your desk is getting to be a dangerous place. If memory serves you already have Don's "Sinistre" as a desk knife (I'll figure out a way to get that off of you some day :) ). With this acquisition you have knives from 2 of my favorite makers within arms reach as you work. Bravo!

So lovely to see a design where every part flows so well into the whole.

Magnus' work embodies art and craft, and Coop had a hand in this creation, too.

Bravo to both.

John
