i am looking at buying my first slipjoint knife.the stockman design grabs my attention the most, but i am looking for a decent blade steel.i have been told that case knives steel does not hold an edge, although they seem to have two types of blade steel?any help on that one.
also queens have been reconmended as they use d2,but do they use d2 on all their knives?again any help.
buck, buck creek and bulldog brand all seem to have good models but are they any good?
i'm sure there are others but slipjoints are new to me so your help and advice will be much appreciated.
cheers

Here is just my take/opinion on things, and there are people who are much more knowledgable than me around these parts.
Case - has two types of steel. Their rgular TruSharp, which sharpens REAL easy but does not hold an edge very well and general consensus around here is its pretty crappy. On limited models they use their Chrome Vanadium.Better than their TruSharp, heard it peppers easily. A lot of folks seem to like it. No personall experience.
Queen. The D2 models are awesome! Quite a lot harder to sharpen than Case or even 440 or 1095 steel but great edge holding! Queen do not use D2 on all their knives. Not sure what steel they use - I suspect 440 or 1095 (guessing). IMO all Queen knives are a good buy. Fit and finish and quality is way above many other brands.
I have heard OK things about Buck Creek - neither great nor horrible
Bulldogs seem popular around here. Good bang for the buck and they have some nice stockmans.
Other brands to look into are Kissing Crane, (German) Eye Brand and Hen and Rooster.
Out of the ones you listed I would go with a Queen! I am sure other folks can add some input!

If you want cheap but very good get Schrade Old Timer. 1095 so not stainless but hold and takes a great edge. Mid range price I would get Queen's D2. I have both and like both very much.

If you go to this site, all of knives under the following headings are in D2 steel: Carved Stag Bone Handles, Genuine Cocobolo Wood Handles, Jigged Black Cherry Delrin Handles, Smooth Black Cherry Delrin Handles.

Check out MOOREMAKER .
Ive got a few of them and their fit and finish are excellent. Plus they offer many different bone handle colors, both jigged and smooth. I believe they use 1095 High C steel in their blades. I also have a few Queens with the D2 steel which is a better steel. However, the fit and finish on the Queens has been hit and miss for me.
