I just received a Cattaraugus knife in a trade. I have never heard of this company before. My question is what is the steel used in these knives? I did a search and got little information on this topic. Would this knife make a good EDC? I thought it looked like a nice knife and wantedto show it off so Here are some pic.

Thanks for looking,
John

nice knife! interesting... it says Made in Japan.
I know AG Russell owns the trademark and they
have their knives made all over.
No idea about the steel though. Currently AG is making them in ATS-34.
But I don't see that model. If it was < $100 I bet 420HC.

Make that AG has granted a license to Case to make them in ATS-34.
But AG is selling them on their site.

Cattaraugus knife company went out of business in the 1960's, The original knives, go for high prices, The founder of Cattaraugus knife company was married to one of the Case Brothers, Sisters. go to the link below, and click on the Cattaraugus logo. When the company closed in the 60's. somewhile after A.G. Russell bought the trademark. useing the trademark on knives that were made for the A.G. Russell Collectors club. In fact back in 2004 Case bought out a series of knives, celebrating the Cattaraugus knife company, but had to get permission from A.G.Russell to use the Cattaraugus name. I recently got hold of one of these knives myself. bought it via e-bay UK site, for rather a small price, really pleased with the knife, very nice jigging, and fit and finish. After all that I cannot tell you what the blades are made of.

That knife made using AUS8A at about 59 Rc so it should be a fine user, Keep in mind that one recently sold on http://cuttingedge.com went for $185 so you may want to keep it unused.
