Hey guys, Im not new to knives at all, I have benchamdes, spydercos, and others, but Im pretty new to slip joints, I have a buck 373. I really like it and the classic feel of a slip joint. Im looking to buy a new one, and I have been eyeing the boker double tree's and german eye brands, but I really dont know how their quality is. I see most people like Case knives, but I dont reall care much for them and i dont know why, so Im not real interested in them. I see on ebay I can get the boker double trees for 50-75 and also the german eye knives. How are rough riders? they are really inexpensive but seem to get decent reviews. I really appreciate any help on choosing a quality knife. Thanks!!

YOU DON'T LIKE CASE ???? Just kidding.

Buy what YOU want, it doesn't matter whos name is on it if you enjoy them..

As far as the RR'S, there have been many lengthy discussions about them and the general thought seems to be they are a perrty good knife for the price. There have been some that didn't have great FF, but there have been others that have been said to be very good..

personally i would recommend the yellow handled CV knives from case:thumbup:
the rough riders i have are all excellent and for the money cant be beat:thumbup: fit and finish on mine has been darn near perfect which is impressive for a 10 dollar knife.
i dont own any boker, etc... so i cant honestly comment on them
good luck
ivan

If you use the auction site as I have many many times , make sure the knife is what they describe it as. I had a problem with a german owl that was not a german owl when I recieved it.

Good luck and let us know waht you get.

Ivan is correct. Case Yellow. I must say, I like Case's SS, on my Sodbuster 2138!

What is the Case CV? It just seems like ive heard that the more recent case knives arent as good as the older ones, and I dunno. I really love the look of the Boker double tree bolsters too. What is special about the Case yellow knives?

cv = chrome vanadium

From Cases Wab site;

Our line of chrome vanadium knives are a special formula of alloyed cutlery steel known for its ease of re-sharpening. A quick touch-up will bring back a blade’s original sharp edge.(Extra care is needed with CV. A thin film of oil should be kept on the blade to maintain the finish of the steel.)

They are easy to shapen but also stain easy. I prefer cv over the Stainless steel myself.

"What is special about the Case yellow knives" At one time all yellow handle case knives were cv, unfortunatly they may be switching to Stainless

I see, I had heard about some of cases steel not being very good, but seems like the cv is the good stuff. I dont mind some staining on the blade, in fact on slip joints i think it looks kinda good. that german eye brand is really calling my name, but there are some good looking case knives too.

What is the best place to buy your slipjoints from?

I think other Blade Forum members would be a good way to go. also I have had mostly good luck on the bay action site but I am very carefull to check their feedback, item description and pictures. There are several places on line but I havent tried them.Check out casexx.com

ive bought from Smokey Mtn Knife Works
and Cumberland both were:thumbup:
lots of top notch companies out there, i'm sure you'll be getting many recommendations
you should buy what your drawn to, then post picts and a review:D
sorry wasnt trying to hard sell case, just dont overlook 'em:D
good luck

This knife will be for a christmas present, I always plan really early what i want. Is there an area where people sell slipjoints on here or do i just have to keep my eyes open on the trade forum?

Places:

Shepherd Hills Cutlery (Case only, I believe).
Cumberland.
Sooner State.
KnivesPlus, KnivesShipFree, etc, etc.

The German Eye Brand is very good, as is Boker. Boker makes a wide range. Their lower priced knives are a very good value. I don't own any of the super fancy, higher dollar ones.

Shooter Punk,

I got into slipjoints a year ago. I have bought several brands, and for the most consistent fit and finish, Case usually wins compared to many other brands. Now I have knives that I love that are made by Queen and Boker, and others, but Case may be the most consistent in quality for an average production knife, just my opinion. Have fun shopping! :)

The more more I look at the Cases the more Im liking them. In the review forum there is a good review on a Case, and it's a beautiful knife. I may end up getting a couple of them, sometimes it's too hard to decide on just one.

Decide on just one? heck, with the selection case has, it hard to decide on half a dozen! ;)

I'd say go look around at collectorknives.net (my favorite dealer) he has some nice case stuff, and a multitude of other brands as well.

How are Case's damascus knives? I love the look of them and for damascus they seemed pretty well priced, is their damascus of good quality?. Ice, I really like that site you gave me, a lot of great stuff there.

The damascus is made by Devin and Rob Thomas, that's about as good as it gets for a production knife. The base steel for the damascus is 1075 (with nickel added) so it's reasonably good for taking and holding an edge but is not a "super steel" by any means.

It should provide good service.

Im sure its not a super steel, but more wondering if it is was a quality damascus. Thats good to hear that it is though, there is a damascus canoe that I am eyeing right now.

You don't get much better quality than the damascus put out by Devin Thomas.
