I've been looking at the newly released "Mick Strider" smfs, and, I'm a little underwhelmed. I've yet to see my main issues addressed, the lack of lock-bar insert and bearings.

I'm sorry, but Aluminum isn't going to suffice in my $500+ folder. Not only do I find titanium to be the superior material in terms of carry-ability, but I'm almost insulted in the corner cutting?

I'm glad that they've transitioned from S30v/154 to the newer and improved blade steel, however, why would you compromise this upgrade with a downgrade in another area? It drives me nuts.

I can't understand why, as a knife maker, you'd not want to produce the best product by every standard. It isn't as if cost is an issue here.

***EDIT*** Apparently I'm an idiot with poor to lacking reading comprehension. The lockside REMAINS TITANIUM. The G10 side is now Aluminum. I'm still unimpressed. Perhaps less so.

Don’t know about material difference but I think lockbar isserts mean little to nothing on a well executed framelock

Perhaps. I carry one of the first-production ZT0560s and it lacks an insert. I've yet to encounter an issue.

With that being said, with so many respectable companies adopting the innovation, I've got to accept that it carries some appreciable amount of weight.

Regardless, no bearings, aluminum lockside down graded from titanium? No thanks.

Like the way striders look but that’s about it maybe somebody else can speak on the lockside bc I have no clue. Surely it’s not actually aluminum

Yeah, as it turns out, I've misunderstood a number of listing. Regardless, I feel aluminum is a downgrade for sure. Less so with G10 vs Titanium, but, a downgrade nevertheless.

What made you think that the lock side is now aluminum? The listing you posted? And i think the aluminum show scales should be seen as an additional option. I don't think it's to replace G10 in all SMF offerings.

Yeah, I fudged up.

I've only seen the aluminum options on the forums in the past weeks. I've yet to see a G10 "M. Strider" option. Maybe I'm mistaken.

Regardless, the aluminum transition/option is a strange one. Certainly not a calculated upgrade. Which I expect with $500+ knives.

It was miss-typed on GP, it should have read Titanium and aluminum. The lock side is Ti and the black gunner grip side is milled out of aluminum.

I think I misunderstood. I read a few for sale posts stating "aluminum" and briefly went over the few available dealer offerings and thought that the lockside was aluminum. It is not.

More than likely the aluminum is 6000 or 7000 series, extremely tough stuff. Its just about as strong or as is strong as the titanium. Definitely stronger than G10.

They have used aluminum scales before on the SMF it is nothing new, just one of many configurations. I presume it is to make a lighter
version of the SMF, but I could be wrong on that-never seen the reason in print.
Likely just a run, next run will be something different.

On of the reasons Strider has utilized aluminum in the past was to make it autoclavable for sterilization.

an old monkey edge description:

"The new Strider SMF Aluminum model features the same bombproof design and features but the G10 scale has been replaced with aluminum. There are lateral grooves for improved grip as well as a snazzy Strider logo engraved. It has been mil spec hard coat anodized and has the benefit of being able to be placed in an autoclave for sterilization for medical personell."
