Hi, all. What is the correct pronunciation of SOG. Do you say it like hog or dog, or do you spell it out S-O-G? Thanks, Shane

HKman

I believe its Sss...Orgg.
Fast hissing on the S, as in Snake eater.

Krizzard, out.

"...Whoever kills with the sword must be killed by the sword... "

If you go out hunting for a hog, in a bog with your dog, and decide to sit on a log, if you carry a SOG your knife will rhyme with all of them:D
Welcome to the forums.
Rob

I wish I did own SOG. At least then I would finally be able to own a Trident! :D

Hi HKman,

Yes, you too had me wondering if Spencer and Gloria Frazer (co-owners) sold the company without telling me about it!

Though I've heard some call it S-O-G, we say "SOG" as in rhyming with "FOG."

Hi Shane, welcome from another SOG-newbie... Which one did you get?

BTW Ron, exactly what does SOG stand for? I've read both "Special Operations Group" and "Studies and Observations Group". Since the latter is less logical, it actually makes more sense to me... :D

Hi, Peter. I bought a new Pentagon Elite. I bought it over the internet and it should arrive any day. I can't wait. My next SOG will be a fixed blade, maybe a Government or a SEAL knife. Shane

The Pentagon looks cool enough to me!

The Trident should be a stunner... For me, it was a toss-up between that one and the S1 Bowie. Since I can't wear fixed blades anyway where I live, and would be for show-off and feel-good only anyway,
I chose the latter. Even more beautiful than the Trident...

 :D

Peter - Hope I got this right:

"SOG" was originally "Special Operations Group"; however, it was believed to indicate too closely what the units real purpose was, predominatly clandestine operations; therefore, meaning of the acronym was changed to "Studies & Observation Group" - mission stayed the same.

SOG units have a great & proud history in Vietnam, operating across the border into Cambodia, Laos, and North Vietnam, which is just now becoming known.

Hi Guys,

I certainly don't want to contradict John, but from my understanding, Studies and Observations Group was the original designation while Special Operations Group was an acceptable substitute later on.

Here is a link to a specific page on our website giving a brief history of MACV/SOG.

If someone is certain of their "SOG" history here (as I am certainly NOT a SOG historian), please feel free to share.

Ron - I stand corrected. I am certainly don't pass myself off as an expert on SOG either. Explanation I gave, came from "SOG: The Secret Wars of America's Commandos in Vietnam", by John L Plaster.

Actually explanation referenced on SOG Specialty Knives web site & one I gave from book are basically the same: "Studies & Operations Group" was a cover name for "Special Operations Group".

There is so much history about SOG that is just now coming to light; The very existence of SOG's activities in Vietnam was officially denied until years after the war ended.

I knew I should have let you reply to this post, instead of jumping in.

Enjoy the SHOT Show - John
